Goal weight....How do you decide and for what reason?

I made a goal weight..then thought about it some more..the goal i had decided upon was from a point i was at 10 years ago!

i wondered if folks had thought about this..or did the same as me..just rolling the clock back..

a short roll back is ok...but then..get real..so what are your reasons for setting your goal weight where it is?

    regards tony..

    Re: Goal Weight?

for me it was a combination of being where I was 10 years ago... and the charts.....and I've been really low before.. down to 98 - 105 range for several years..... looking back at pictures.. it was really too thin for me... didn't look well....... 120-125 is good for me imo... I just hope i make it...

I think some people think they look better thinner... when they really don't...
    2-15-10 194.8 - highest ever!
    2-20-10 190.4 - new scale
    3-20-10 177.8 - 1 month
    5-10-10 169.8 - 25 pounds gone!

      Re: Goal Weight?

I haven't been under 200 pounds in about 20 years so I don't really have a roll back weight I can remember LOL. I picked mine because it seemed reasonable. It might be adjusted as time goes on, but for now it gives me something to shoot for.

        Re: Goal Weight?

I think it is best to concentrate on measurements and size. I have a goal weight right now that I have not been at for a good 10 years either, but it is just a number. If I reach a size that I am comfortable at and wearing a size that flatters me, and I weigh 185 lbs, then so be it. I will start to maintain then.

          Re: Goal Weight?

Goal weight should be based on a healthy for you body fat percent not where you were x yrs ago or what looked good x yrs ago either since you may or may not depending on your eating history in those yrs between have more lean body tissue now or less if say for examply you have been a long time yoyo dieter.

Your doc can help you decide what a healthy weight based on your lean body weight is. Don't worry about those charts neither the BMI nor the height weight charts know how much of your weight is lean tissue. if you have been going to the gym and eatting your Atkins right you should have more lean body weight on the way down then you did on the way up in weight too so scale weight can be decieving as many of us found out when were were goalies at a heavier then we thought it should be body weight casue our body fat was in the lower part of the healthy range and our projected goal weights would have been unhealthy for us. There is a lot of research and science out there to help y'all set realistic for your body goal weights. use it

          happy low carbing.

I set my goal weight for 150. I am 5'5". I haven't seen that weight in 14 years. I just remember feeling healthy and good about myself at that weight. I felt strong.

              Re: Goal Weight?

              I'm 5'3" and my goal is 150.

I have been over 150 lb since I was 12, so frankly, getting anywhere in that ballpark will be a miracle!

I have no illusions of being 115 lb or anything... I was over 200 lb when I graduated high school....

                Re: Goal Weight?

I use the BMI chart for a "ballpark" goal weight. That is when I reach that figure I'll re-evaluate myself. If I need to lose more, I will. If not, then I've hit goal. I don't get hung up on the scale numbers.

Right now I weigh more than I look like I weigh---and that's fine with me because I fit into smaller clothing.

                  Re: Goal Weight?

My goal wasn't really a number either. It was an overall improvement in health and energy. I was tired of being tired! And more and more of my clothing was spandex and/or elastic. I wore big shirts all the time to cover up the couch potato I had become. I was very unhappy and knew I had to take charge of my health before I got any older.

Atkins is so much more than weight loss, although that's what attracts people to the plan. Once you follow the plan IN TOTAL (including exercise and supplements), you realize how great it is to feel absolutely healthy! To me, the weight loss is secondary!

I agree with Betty. I've been overweight pretty much all of my life so really didn't know what a healthy weight would be for me. I did know that if I didn't make a change now I was heading for big trouble (I'm 42 years old). When I first started Atkins, I did look at the charts to have a ballpark figure. As I started exercising (yeah, I'm another addict now), my goals became fitness goals and like Betty the weightloss is just an awesome by-product!

I will however, like 2big suggested talk to my doctor and look at body fat percentages, lean muscle mass etc.

                      Re: Goal Weight?

I chose mine randomly, and am now thinking it is too low. I want muscles. I think I could hit my stated goal, if I wanted to be skinny... I want to be fit. I want to look like the fitness models, not the fashion models. I was reading Oxygen the other day, and it hit me, this woman in my size 160 and FABULOUS.. not gross buffed out like a guy with little tiny steriod boobs, but muscular in a smooth, beautiful way. AND she started at my current weight, which was encouraging. I think that is more realistic than 130 for me. We are not tiny bones folks in our family, and I dont want to look sick.

Better, I want to look smooth. I dont care at what weight that happens, as long as it does.

I too chose mine randomly at first. I thought 140 is good for me! Then, I got to 140 and stood in front of the mirror naked........I still wasn't pleased with what I saw so to 125 I went. Now, I stand in front of the mirror naked and I am thinking hmmm.........still a little pinch here and there.......must challenge harder physically!! So for me......I guess I'm trying to be a perfectionist but that's just how I ended up....from a fat lazy pale ale drinker to an Atkins/Exercising freak!....I can ALWAYS work on something whether it's a change or maintaining what I have built.

I still don't know what my goal weight should be. I picked "175" out of the air. I can't remember being that small. I can remember being a size 14 and I liked that a lot! I think what I really want is to be healthy and fit. I will look at what I should weigh according to BMI as suggested and maybe adjust from there. I just can not for the life of me, imagine me skinny. I have been overweight most of my life. In fact, I find some skinny people, too skinny and unattractive to me. I want to be luscious (lol), but fit and STRONG!!

I picked a number out of a hat.

When I was thin before I started having babies, I weighed about 120. After the fourth one, I went to about 140 and looked just as good.
