  • Labor Day? You can beat it! Tips for success

Ah, those grills are being fired up for the Labor Day barbecues and parties all over America.

Still, just because the parties are going on doesn't mean those pounds don't have to come on with it!

Here are some strategies to get you through this first holiday of many more to come. Please feel free to add more, stories, experience, anything that will help all of us at ADBB get through this first of the 'fall' holidays!

    Tips for Labor Day Success

Make sure your meat isn't being marinated before it hits the grill!

Don't be afraid to ask what's in something! It isn't rude of you at all. What looks like a plain hamburger could have Lipton Onion soup mix in it!

Instead of potatoes on the shishkebabs, go for green peppers, red bell peppers, jalapenos, and tomato.

Keep hydrated and wear plenty of sunscreen this holiday weekend! Water not only keeps your skin hydrated, it keeps you less hungry and healthy!

Watch tuna salads and other deli-prepared foods. Many of them have hidden sugars.

Don't be afraid to say, "NO!" Many people tell me, "You can have THIS! It's low-calorie!" I just tell them my doctor says I can't have it. My Dr is Dr Atkins!

Plan AHEAD what your strategies will be, and put the emphasis on exercise and activity, friends and fun! Food is nourishment-- not the holiday itself!

If you are at a party, set up the croquet set and challenge friends to a game! It keeps you away from the food, and gets others moving, too! (Plus you'll get some of your exercise in for the day!)

Take food you know you CAN have. You'll be surprised how many dig right in and would never know you're following a low-carb lifestyle.

Keep copies of Tammy's "induction list" with you. It's pocket-sized and can be printed out and kept with you at all times! This acts as a reminder for a last-minute "can I have this"... especially as far as potatoes and corn are concerned (back away from them!)

2big has said this time and again, and it's something that has stuck with me: Holidays are about the people you're with and not the food.

How many times does our focus become what we're eating and not who we're spending time with? Don't relegate this holiday season to one of food amnesia and tripple helpings of Auntie Mahetabel's fudge cake supreme!

Don't hurt your body by taking recerational drugs in the form of food this holiday season!

Keep your senses clear, your body clean, and your hips thinner this Labor Day Weekend!

Great post, Cleo, though as usual, your enthusiasm is underwelming (grin)

Let me remind people that when cake and icecream are served, you have options. Don't deprive yourself TOTALLY of treats this weekend! Prepare in advance so you, too, will have a dessert! Bring along a jello and cream cheese mold. Tote a small serving of cheesecake or cheesecake pudding.

This woe isn't about depriving yourself. It's about CHOOSING to eat the RIGHT treats.

Sometimes it's a good idea to tell people in advance that you're low carbing it. I did this one time just as a heads-up to let my friends know that I appreciated the food they were planning to cook, but I wouldn't be able to eat all of it. They totally outdid themselves and cooked a complete Atkins-friendly buffet that had everyone at the party drooling, low carbers or not (90% not). I was shocked - I certainly hadn't been expecting or demanding a customized menu!

The most important thing to remember is that holidays will come and go, but you live in your body year round. Treat it well.

I went to my in-laws for Labor Day. I knew we were having ham. Everything else I couldn't eat so I took green beans. Even though I had only ham and green beans, I was proud that I didn't cheat with everything else!

My words of advice, meant to be taken in a NICE WAY (cause Cleo you are my girl)... for me, I had to stop equating food with holidays. Sounds ridiculous when so many of our holidays mean pigging out. But that is what I personally had to do. I still enjoy holidays, but it's not about the food-- its about the actual holiday. Again, this is just what I had to do for me. And I feel VERY VERY strongly about it with Thanksgiving and Christmas. Those holidays are SOOO not about food and its the time when most people plunge deep into pig out mode and come back in January sad, blue, and fatter than ever. Don't be a victim to that!

Sorry for preaching, but I feel very strongly about this...

Amen, Allie! Holidays are not meant to be equated with food but with family and friends!

The sooner we realize this, the sooner the holidays become a lot easier.

So how do I tell my family this Thanksgiving and Christmas that there will not be a big turkey dinner this year? They would revolt. I know what you're going to say. You can still make an Atkins-friendly meal but they expect certain things like mashed potatoes, stuffing, pumpkin pie....

wannabe-- How about this Thanksgiving you and your family volunteer in the local soup kitchen helping feed the less fortunate? When you are done, you guys can go home and eat an abbreviated dinner (much smaller). Then the onus becomes helping others more than getting a gut filled with turkey and all the fixin's!

No one says you can not have the delicious Thanksgiving dinner. Turkey, green bean casserole, Just Like Stuffed Baked Potatoes, Dreamfields baked mac n cheese (if it doesn't bother you), rutabagas (oh my gosh), collard greens, a lc cheesecake, etc etc etc etc etc.

No deprivation here. And if they want mashed taters, fix em mashed taters and you eat Just Like Stuffed Baked Potatoes.

It's only hard if you make it hard.

funny thing is......if you go way back before food manufacturing, what did everyone else eat?

Make it a truly "authentic" holiday "like the old days" and you wont have any crap foods. Only whole foods to contend with.

Funny thing is, Allies menu sounds sooooooo much better than the traditional thanksgiving menu. hey, I think I'm finally trained.
