I am on extended induction. A very busy day today...and a supper at the neighbors, who only made a small salad so I have not gotten my carbs in today. In fact only 6-1=5 effective carbs. I missed a salad today due to travel and the battery in the van dying. Can I have tomato juice as long as it is within my carbs? I know I can have tomato...and put tomato sauce in my recipes. 1 cup would make my day 997 cal(I know...that is way to low...usually I am over 1500) 16-2=14 effective carbs. Ratios would be 64% fat, 6%carb, 30% Protein. Would appreciate some help as it is getting late and really I just want to go to bed. Thanks!

Re: Tomato Juice??
Personally? I wouldn't drink it. 14 grams in a single shot when your body is used to getting 20 over the course of the day is quite a carb-punch.

So you think it is better if I just have 5 carbs for the entire day?Elsie150

Re: Tomato Juice??
I think it's better than a big blood sugar spike right before bed, yep.
And personally, I don't ever drink juice. It's the worst - all the sugar, none of the fiber.
If you're not hungry, don't do it just to make your numbers better for the day. Do better tomorrow

Re: Tomato Juice??
All right...I was trying to get my carbs up because that is one of the reasons I am doing extended induction. I am trying to get my carbs up to the 20 on a regular basis..that and to get my calories up to my BMR....I am still sucking at both though! And today is bad at both. Thanks Brook!Elsie150

Re: Tomato Juice??
Apart from having the 14 carbs at once in a concentrated swallow you might find that a cup of tomatoes was from too many tomatoes!!
According to fitday one cup of chopped tomatoes is 8 - 2 carbs = 6 net carbs, so 14 carbs-worth of juice would be from over 2 cups of tomatoes.Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

Re: Tomato Juice??
Okay..I am back with more questions. Please talk slowly and clearly so I can wrap my mind around it...LOL.
IF I wanted a cup of tomato juice on extended induction (or any phase for that matter)...for what ever reason..not nessecarily just to raise carbs but just because I wanted one...can I or can't I??
There is 9g effective carbs in it. And it is a allowable food. And so shouldn't I be able to do that as it is an induction food at this point. (Brook...didn't you say that it didn't matter if you had more than 2 cups salad and 1 cup other vegie...that you could have more induction vegies so long as you did not go over the 20g??) Or use it say...if I am on rung one and wanted to use it as one of the items that I might enjoy having on a regular basis in my OWL??
Any and all opinions welcome here as I learn this WOE!Elsie150

Re: Tomato Juice??
HI Elizellen
Fitday says 10g carb-1 fiber so that would equal 9g effective carbs. I am trying to understand as I could easily make a meal that would equal 9g carbs...or more as I move up the ladder. So should it matter if I chose to have a cup of tomato juice once in a while?Elsie150

Re: Tomato Juice??
Elsie-- yes, you CAN have the tomato juice. :^)
Be forewarned, however, that you should eat something HIGH-FAT with it so as to keep your blood sugar from doing the macarena.
That many carbs in one sitting (9-11 carbs per 8 oz serving) could be enough to make you feel like you just ate a pop tart....

Re: Tomato Juice??
Probably not - but for your rung one net 5 carbs you would only be able to have a half cup remember, which is a very small amount.Originally posted by Elsie150HI Elizellen

But if you did it too often you might get a little low in the fibre department!!
I suppose if instead of moving on to the dairy rung straight away you then added several '5 net carb' of veggies rungs then you could have a whole cup now and then if you like without running that risk.Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

Re: Tomato Juice??
Personally I stay away from juices because they have no fiber to blunt the insulin response. However, I do use pureed vegetables--whole vegetables that are tossed into a blender and blended until smooth. The puree has all the fiber that the whole vegetable contained.
Juices are mentioned in the Atkins plan in the OWL Chapter under the Power of Five section after fruits. And in the OWL Power of 5, the tomato juice is limited to 1/2 cup.
