  • Got Stressed and Blew it BIG TIME!

I had a really bad day today. I got so stressed that I started devouring a pound cake that I baked to take to work tomorrow. I couldn't stop. I ate two pieces. I'm so disgusted with myself. I was doing so well, and now I have really blown it .

Has anyone else ever blown it this big only to come back and win the war??? Please tell me I'm not the only one, and that I can rise above this.

Re: Got Stressed and Blew it BIG TIME!

I used to blow it regularly. Then I had to ask myself the following questions:

Why don't I deserve to lose weight?

What issues am I refusing to deal with by eating this?

    How could I react differently?

What usually is the precursor to an eating episode?

How can I recognize the signs and avoid it?

It's tough. I know it! I think that, seriously, a lot of our overeating is due to our refudsal to look into ourselves and handle our problems without drugging ourselves with food.

You can do it! Just look inside yourself and ask yourself those questions too.

You can do it. In fact, with your very next meal. You don't feel good both emotionally as well as physically and now you have learned. Move on, drink your water and do not look back. Only look back to those familiar feelings when you get the desire to devour. Lift your chin and your water glass!

First of all I think you need to realize that we are all human, and being perfect is not very rational. Although I've learned that there are people on this board who are perfect and never cheat, I don' t believe that this is normal or mentally healthy...hence your incredible guilt. (Dr. Atkins himself addresses this very issue in his book.)

These 2 pieces of cake are not going to derail you. What MIGHT derail you is if you eat 2 pieces of cake every day. So just shake it off and start fresh tomorrow. Maybe throw in some extra exercise tonight if it makes you feel better. This is not a race. By doing Atkins, I'm assuming you've learned the truth about how to lose weight. You've got the rest of your life to get this thing under control.

Next time instead of 2 pieces just eat 2 bites and savor them slowly...enjoy them and move on. SP

We all fall at times. Just pick yourself up, dust your knees off and start with the very next meal. You can use this as a learning experience. Think about what you will do the next time you get so stressed. Make a plan as to what action you will take to keep from turning to food. Use exercise as a tool. Put all your stress, anger or frustrations(what ever you are feeling) into your workout. You are strong. You can do it.

the good thing is you did not go into a all day, all out binge! Sometimes you have to find the bright side. Forget it... it is over, it is done. Like Cleo said figure it out and the next time you are under alot of stress try to have a plan!

Stress *is* difficult .. the key is to learn to deal with stress in POSITIVE ways .. not easy I know, but worth it long-term.

I AGREE .. DRINK YOUR WATER AND GET RIGHT BACK ON TRACK. Next time stress hits (its inevitable..), TAKE A WALK, TAKE A SHOWER, DO YOUR NAILS, CALL A FRIEND!

None of us are perfect. But I would never advise tomorrow....always with the next meal. I feel that my obsession with what I put in my mouth is healthy. I must be honest here I think worrying about my next sugar fix is much less healthy. This is where pulling from within comes in handy.

Re: Got Stressed and Blew it BIG TIME!

I wish I could say I've never blown it... but I have... but I'm in this for the long haul... when I blow it.. I keep reminding myself where I could be if I HADN'T blown it.. and it makes it a bit easier NOT to blow it the next time.......

I don't usually blow it on cake..... it's usually something 'semi-legal'... like the peaches... but I end up eating WAAAAAAAAY too many of them..... so it's just as bad as if I ate cake...

simply KNOWING what to do... and having the power to do it are 2 different things... and I'm in the same boat as you... there's times when the impulse just takes over... and I mess up....

don't kick too hard... that sets up that cycle of self-defeating things... right?

we can do this... it's about the long haul.. the big picture... in 3 weeks.. will that cake even still be a factor? we'll do better...and get stronger along the way

Re: Got Stressed and Blew it BIG TIME!

Thank you all! You are such a terrific support group. The next time I feel stressed, I will definitely not bake....for any reason, for anyone! I simply can't have the stuff in front of me when I feel tempted.

It also helps me to realize that eating this way is a lifetime habit, so when I do mess up, it's not the end of this WOE. It's a bump in the road. I just don't want to hit that many bumps!

When things in life are out of my control, that's when I begin to self-sabatoge myself. Some of you suggested exercising when I am stressed, and I know in the past that has worked. So I need to do that. I did become so frustrated with myself after eating the cake that I cleaned the kitchen like a mad woman! At least I now have clean floors!!

Thanks again! I appreciate all the responses, encouragement, and advice.

Been there, done that. It think it's GREAT you caught yourself and realized what was going on. It's so easy to "blow it" for a week. A day..a meal...that's great. Now.....that's over with. You take Cleo's advice and think about the questions for the next time...and there will be a next time for stress....but there doesn't have to be a next time for "blowing it". Great job posting for the support. That's what we are here for. Now...let's get back on track. Drink that water.

Re: Got Stressed and Blew it BIG TIME!

right now I'm stressed really bad myself... and last night... if there HAD been a cake in the house.. it might have been bad news......

10 years ago, I weighed between 118-123.... Daddy was diagnosed with cancer... a tumor in his leg. ... we were runners... averaging 25 or more miles a week... 58 road races in 2004....

the cancer changed my life ..... I stopped running.. (just couldn't get motivated without DAddy)...... went back to Grad school... gained 50 pounds in ONE year...

well.. last saturday... Daddy pointed out a big knot on his forearm..... I asked him if he'd had it checked... he said no...

He goes for a bone scan today.....

last night... I was numb... terrified.. that cancer could again be the diagnosis.....

                          I felt weak.... useless.....

then I realized... I can't do this again... I just can't.......I am praying that it's not cancer.. (we won't know until next week)......

but I understand how stress can give us 'excuses' to do the wrong things...

I definately live by this rule. I can't make cookies. I know this about myself, so I never make them now.

I have fallen off the wagon before too. Just get back on for the next meal. Don't beat yourself up. Learn from it and move on. Look at this as your new WOL not a diet.

                              Peytonn,

If your father does end up having cancer please, please do research on natural, healthy remedies. Cancer is not a "disease"...it's a toxic condition that spirals out of control. In order to cure cancer you have to purify your blood and detoxify your organs. Please check out the following:
