Re: Hazardous Low Carb Diet Article

He might have chosen to write the article in a way that many of Dr A's followers would have cared to read.

Instead he's only preaching to a very narrow choir instead of attempting to help the people who may need it most.

"Why people following low-carb diets may be Folic-deficient"

An important issue, but by a man who equates futures on the market in a false analogy to following a way of eating which has helped many.

Well, we might be folic acid deficient, but we aren't choline deficient or DHA and ARA deficient. ARA, DHA and choline are things thought to help brain development in babies and children. They're dumping DHA and ARA into eery baby formula and baby food nowadays. They're going to start dumping choline into those things pretty soon.

Oh yeah, and here's another nugget of info that guy failed to mention. If you are taking folic acid to help your heart, it won't do you a bit of good unless you have sufficient amounts of choline. Where do you get choline? The best sources are egg yolks and liver.

        Exactly!!!

I wish that people who choose to right stories on the Atkins diet and other low carb plans would actually put some research into first.

Re: Hazardous Low Carb Diet Article

We should all be grateful that research on folic acid deficieny has, thankfully led to reduced incidence of spina bifida. With each pregnancy, my Dr's prescribed folic acid almost immediately...that was responsible medical care...not to rely on what may or may not come through diet. (most otc multivites, by FDA rulings, at least when i was having babies, not that long ago, did not contain sufficient amounts of Folic acid)

A developing fetus needs protein for growth a heck of a lot more than they need empty carbs from white bread. Also, limiting calories while your pregnant vs safe excercise ??? Well I would say that it's in Mom's and baby's best interests for mom to excercise moderately (depending on state of pregnancy) instead of limiting calories (which mom and baby both need). I have no patience for doctors who don't know their stuff and esp for docs who preach garbage info, imho, abusing the authoratative title of 'doctor'.

This article was written out of pure ignorance before doing any amount of research on the facts of low carb diets that are done correctly.

I was on low carb the whole time I was trying to get pregnant and lost 36 pounds just before getting pregnant. But, I was also taking pre-natal vitamins because I was trying to get pregnant. And my baby was born absolutely perfect.
