  • My One-Week's Notice

I'm giving this one more week before I do what I've done in the past to lose weight - go hungry due to calorie reduction. I'm up to 163.5 this morning after almost a month of Atkins (the second time around), which is a net loss of only ONE POUND, no inches. I'm taking a trip in less than two weeks and had hoped to be rid of about 10 pounds by now. I certainly don't want to go back to eating lots of white flour and sugar, but I obviously cannot follow Atkins to a T in order to lose weight.
    On modified low-carb plan
    164.5/159.5/130
    Walking 20-30 minutes/day, 5 days/week

    A few things....

    1. Are you exercising?
    2. How close are you to your TOM?
    3. Have you figured out your BMR?
    4. Post a couple of your menues or post a link to your fitday account if you have one.

If you're going to do calorie reduction why don't you try Atkins and calorie reduction? With Atkins, you won't feel hungry all the time. This is what I am doing and even though my calories are low, I don't feel hungry and I'm losing weight.

I walk, but not every day. I plan to walk every day this week.

I don't have TOMs anymore. I had a hysterectomy two months ago.

I don't know how to figure out my BMR.

I've posted 2-3 times what I've eaten, and was told my menu looked fine.

On Atkins, we are supposed to eat when we are hungry, right? If I do that, I won't be reducing calories anymore than I already have.

In order to reduce calories, I will have to go hungry because it will mean less food, even if it's less low-carb food.

Well maybe it's the type of foods you are choosing to eat that leaves you feeling hungry.

Yup, maybe it's WHAT you are eating...try more veggies if you're not already getting in your max allowed, they're the best for bringing calories down! Also try different cuts of meat, cut out bacon etc. look at the calories in the things you are already eating and try to have a lower calorie replacement perhaps?

Thanks so much for taking the time to offer advice! Based on what you are saying, it sounds like I would be following something other than Atkins. And it seems to all come down to the same core advice: count calories, not necessarily carbs.

Dr. Atkins says to watch calories after the first 2 weeks of induction. Just because you are watching calories doesn't mean you aren't doing atkins. It's still atkins if you are restricting carbs.

I find that a big omelette filled with veggies and sausage is very filling for me. Veggies like onion, mushrooms, green and red peppers. It is low in calories and carbs and very filling. I use 5 eggs to make it and have enough for 2 meals (breakfast and lunch when split in half).

To me it sounds like you already have your mind made up and that you want to go back to a non-carbs-reduced, reduced calorie diet. I guess there's nothing else we can tell you to change your mind.

                      Re: My One-Week's Notice

You have been given excellent advise. As you progress up the carb ladder you will find that your calories naturally do go down as does your fat consumption. Sorry if I am repeating or asking questions that you have already answered. There are two ways to increase your metabolism.... eat and exercise. Sure, the eat is to eat the proper things. Walking is a great cardio work out but I for one am a strong believer of strength training. Muscle burns fat. If I do not work out I do not lose.
Are you on any meds that could be holding you back? Have you looked into the "yeast" section? How often are you eating?

                        Re: My One-Week's Notice

I am really thinking this has not much to do with your eating but with your hormones My MIL is having the same problems and it doesn't matter what she follows she can't lose weihgt and is really dedicated. I have suggested to her to go and get a full panel done on your hormones this could well be your problem as well get your thyroid checked. If there is any discrepancies between any of those you will ahve one heck of a time losing weight and may even gain weight. Get the levels checked for estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone as well as gett a full panel on your thyroid this does not means a TSH which is useless. Fet free T4 and Free T3 levels. When you get this done post your results I am almost betting there is somehting up with that. Atkins should be working for you and because it's not I am really aiming towards somehting not being right with the Hormones This will cause weight loss to hault and will make you feel horrible.

I hope you find the root of the problems Just know we are all here for you no matter what and all we want is for you to succeed.

                          Re: My One-Week's Notice

I only found one of your menues:

                          Two eggs for breakfast.

Snack: approx. one slice of cheese, microwaved crisp to a cracker, chicken salad

Lunch: 2 hamburger patties with lettuce, pickles, and onion

Snack: About 10 pecans, 1/2 oz. fried cheese

Dinner: Mixed salad with sauteed chicken
And it does look pretty good PROVIDED that you are only eating that amount that satisfies your hunger and aren't eating the amount that makes you feel "full". Satisfied means that your hunger is gone, and you can eat more if you want. Being full means you can feel the lump of food in your stomach after you've eaten.

Ketosis is a natural appetite suppressant, which is why Atkins is great---you don't feel hungry. As your appetite decreases, the amount of food you need to feel "satisfied" decreases as well. In fact, Induction Rule 6 states that:

                          6. Adjust the quantity you eat to suit your appetite, especially as it decreases. When you're hungry, eat the amount that makes you feel satisfied, but not stuffed. When you're not hungry, eat a small controlled carbohydrate snack to accompany your nutritional supplements.
The appetite suppression of ketosis is why Dr. Atkins says you really don't have to count calories while doing his program---because he's banking on us to re-learn our inborn cues of knowing when enough food is enough food. Unfortunately, many of us cannot initially distinguish "satisfied" from "full". Which is why Dr. Atkins advises later in his book to eat only half of what's on your plate. If you're still hungry after an hour, eat the rest of it. Then you'll begin to get the idea of how much you can eat with each meal and still feel "satisfied".

You might want to open a fitday.com account and plug in the foods you are eating just to make sure you aren't overeating your carbs. Fitday will also give you an estimate of what your BMR is. A very, very, very rough estimate of yours is 1600 calories.

I had a hysterectomy two months ago.
I think this is probably the problem. My mother had problems maintaining her weight when she had her hyterectomy. She wasn't overweight, but had started to gain after she had it done. Talk with your doctor and see if this is the cause.

I certainly don't want to go back to eating lots of white flour and sugar, but I obviously cannot follow Atkins to a T in order to lose weight.
