  • Carbs vs. Net Carbs??? I'm confused...

Ok... I have read in a fitness magazine from some Dr. that no matter what, a carb is a carb and you have to count them in your diet. It says that if the product says 3 net carbs on the front and 18 carbs on the listing, then it is still 18 carbs ingested per serving.

I am soooo confused???? I am asking because I bought a container of meringue like cookie things. The container lists as follows.

    Chocolate Meringues
Front----Naturally Fat Free, No Trans Fats, 0g Net Carbs, Sweetened with Splenda.

    Back----Serv. size 13 cookies, serv./container about 4, Calories40,Total carbs 8g, Dietary fiber 2g, sugars 0g, sugar alcohol 6g, protien 5g

    Vanilla Meringues
    List the same except----35 cals.,total carbs 9g,dietary fiber 3g,protien 4g

Can someone please shed some light here? I have eaten 8 lil cookies so far.

according to Dr. Atkins net carbs are as follows:

Net Carbs = Carbs minus Dietary fiber, sugar alcohols, hydrogenated starch hydrolysate and glycerin.

Now enter the great debate about sugar alcohols!!!!! I personally have to count sugar alcohols as they DO matter to me and my body. But, I find I do not have to count fiber carbs. YMMV.

Every sugar alcohol carb matters to me, too! Those supposedly 0 net carbs in sugar alcohol have never been 0 as far as I'm concerned.

Seriously-- if you want to know what screwed me up most when I began low-carbing, it was eating sugar alcohols. The cravings drove me up the wall and I didn't lose weight. I was ingesting every. single. carb.

And how seriously 0 carb can something derived from a pineapple be?!

We subtract fibre grams from total carb counts in order to get net carbs. Sugar alcohols though is a whole different kettle of fish, in my opinion. Recently there was a great article posted about sugar alcohols and how they all effect blood sugar differently. Foods that use sugar alcohols will subract the grams of those from the total carb count. That is how those meringues are labelled as zero carbs. Or how bars and shakes etc. are labelled 3 net carbs, or 3 impact carbs. Be careful of this. If it were me, I would count all sugar alcohol carbs.

Good for you! Personally, I think that's a great decision.

Is a carb a carb? Yes and no.

Fiber is a carbohydrate. However, it is a carbohydrate that has little to no effect on your blood sugar, which is why Dr. Atkins let's us subtract fiber from the total carbohydrate.

Sugar alcohols, organic acids and the rest purportedly have little to no effect on your blood sugar, which is why Dr. Atkins let's us subtract those things from the total carbohydrate. BUT as Bren pointed out, your mileage may vary with them and in some people they can raise the blood sugar as regular sugar would.

Woohoo, mcotton! Those foods are naughty little buggers! They're the machinations of a greedy food company bent on selling low-carbers a false bill of goods.

I also try to avoid sugar alcohols so make our own sweets for taking to parties etc.
Here is an easy meringues recipe from the ADBB Desserts forum
                      http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...read.php?t=563

But if you are on induction and having problems with sugar cravings do not make these unless you are going straight to a party with them!! I would hate to read that you followed the recipe but ended up eating them all yourself
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

I only deduct the fiber too. That SA 'doesn't count' is a myth IMO.

by definition fiber has to enter your mouth and exit your butt unmetabolizes in any way which was why the FDA refused to allow low carb companies like Atkins and others to list glycerine and SA and hydrolized starches as fibers. So labels grew new boxes with effective carbs listed.

Yopu can make your own meringues with whipped egg whites and flavored with a splenda flavored syrup then dried in a warm oven over night. Or you can use almond flour in them when you get to OWL
