Nice one! I tried to vote but a cookie must have been saved on my PC (hope it was low carb,,,, humph) and it won't let me.
SB was a total nightmare for me.... I tried it and ended up heavier than ever. Never again!!

Excellent reply Cleo, and soooo true, I know many people who went onto SB because they didn't have the will power to see Atkins through and SB sounded easier, such a cop out (oh and by the way, none of them are following either anymore) Hmmmm

Re: My review of the South Beach Diet Book at amazon.com
From what you've written, it's really hard to believe that we read the same book.
First of all, Doctor Agatson is a respected cardiologist and not just Mr. South Beach as you call him. In the beginning of the book he goes through a history of other diets. He does not take any credit away from them.
On page 22, he says that he knew and admired Dr. Atkins. He writes that Dr. Atkins, "successfully fought conventional wisdom via improved diet and lifestyle." He goes on to write that Dr. Atkins and Dr. Pritkin were criticized for their commercial successes and have persevered. He gives Dr. Atkins and Dr. Pritkin credit for popularizing the science of nutrition.
No where in the book did I get the feeling that Dr. Agatson was disrespectfull to Dr. Atkins or to Atkins dieters.

Re: My review of the South Beach Diet Book at amazon.com
Just a couple of things in the book that bug me...and only in the first 20 pages: (excuse typoes, I'm readying to go away camping)
Pg 10: "This was in marked contrast to the Atkins Diet, for instance, which bans virtually all carbohydrates and leaves the dieter to exist mostly on proteins. The regiment also permits limitless saturated fats, the kind forund in red meat and butter..."
He goes on to act as though Atkins has no clue about cardiac patients in the same paragraph, when Atkins was a cardiac doctor as well.
He mentions only the early 1970's version of Atkins on page 21, and he states that we now know what Atkins didn't know then on the next page... He's obviously oblivious to the changes Atkins has made up until 2002, which is a bit ironic, considering his book only came out 1 year later!
These kind of intellectually dishonest statements he makes makes it incredibly difficult for me to take him fully seriously. He ought to have either ignored Atkins altogether or he ought to have done his homework. As it is, he looks like he doesn't know what he's talking about on something so minor as this... and then I start to wonder if other assertions he makes are cogent!
I think he makes some interesting points, but to so closely emulate the 2002 version of DANDR, while acting as he does, is grating.Last edited by cleochatra; October 8, 2005, 10:07 AM.

Re: My review of the South Beach Diet Book at amazon.com
Ouch! Loved it! I have a friend doing South Beach and she hasn't lost a pound. I haven't read the book, but it seems to be too much counting (good carbs, bad carbs, good fat, bad fat, cals, fiber etc. etc. etc. )Peace, Jess~
