Re: My review of the South Beach Diet Book at amazon.com

I don't know why we need to rip SB a new But, that's basically what everyone does to ATKINS and it makes me mad. Basically, it's unfair to judge I think ya, a lot of the concepts are derived from atkins But, it's still immature I think to bash other peoples WOE, It's unfair to say. WHat works for one person does not necessarily work for another. My sister has followed SB and has lost a lot of weight. I myself have followed ATKINS and really wouldn't do anything elese cause Atkins works for me.

Just My opinion, I LOVE ATKINS but, I would never critisize other Peoples WOE if it makes them happy. I have friends on WW, SB, JENNY CRAIG, I have never bashed them like they don't bash me it's respect. I don't feel the need.

My gosh that's refreshing to hear on this forum. I come in here with some mildly different points of view (yet I don't ridicule Atkins) and I get nothing but pure hate from most members. It's quite sad, really. SCP

You come into an Atkins Support Group and suggest other ways of eating. Come on. Move along already. I'm sure there's a support group who eats the way you do...find it.

Well I went back and re-read that review. Wow....First of all it sounds to me, Cleo that you have got some major, major pent up anger. I mean seriously. That post sounds like it was written by someone who would like to scratch the eyes out the author. I thought it was just me who made you angry, but it turns out I've got some pretty good company. Second of all, 95% of the first 40 or 50 reviews rated the book at least 4 stars. Yours was the ONLY bad review. I then flipped through the next 50 and it seemed the only ones who had a problem with the book were from those who hated the basic premise of low-carb dieting.

You need to realize that the Atkins diet is not the only way to lose weight. I lost about 20 lbs in the 90s on a low-fat diet. (later gained it back.) People lost weight in droves in the 70's by counting calories. Some people lose weight by cutting out meat. Some people by juice or water fasting. Others by running 50 miles per week. Others by not eating altogether. There is no 'best way' to lose weight. Everyone is different and we all have different metabolisms. To make it even more conveluted, if you ask a hundred doctors you'll probably get a hundred different answers about how to best lose weight. Atkins may, in fact be a good place to start but being this fanatical about it is laughable.

              Streecorner,

Maybe you read her review wrong, but I don't think Cleo was saying anything bad about the people who have had success with South Beach. Forgive the college English professor in me, but her implied thesis was that the author stole his work while slamming the original author. Never did she say a person could not succeed on the diet or that it was invalid.

Re: My review of the South Beach Diet Book at amazon.com

I've read SBD and Pritkin and another 'healing' diet by an author I can no longer remember, and they all tend to slam other diets while proclaiming theirs to be the only final salvation (sound familiar?). Atkins is one of the only books I've read that doesn't put down other diets.

Now, he does say that there are some misguided attempts out there, but explains why they're not effective (long term or at all) for the majority of Northern American people.

I will agree that both Drs. A came to very similar conclusions and have *very* similar plans. I will agree that Dr. Agatson is extremely condescending and disdainful of Dr. Atkins. I won't agree that the plans are different and that both are valid ways of following a low carb weight loss diet.

I have a friend who lost over 30 lbs on SBD and has kept it off. She wants to lose more, but I'm thinking it might not be realistic for her (She has more lean muscle mass than I have total mass...). For her SBD worked because it was low fat, because it had strictly controlled portions, and because it allowed more variety.

Another friend has lost, and kept off, about 15 pounds. For her, it was the combination of caffeine and alcohol that allowed her to accept the other limitations of the diet.

Different people have different needs and different things will work for them. I think SBD is a valid diet and it is possible to lose and keep off weight, if that's the mindset that works for you. However, I still have a negative reaction to it because of the attitude of Dr. Agatson toward Dr. Atkins.

I wish I could say we're all equal, but the truth is Cleo's the cutest.

Thank you, Baby and Laura! I in no way invalidate the SBD or the people who have found solace and success on this way of eating. My issues were, and always have been, with the gentleman who wrote the book. He has shown he never took the time to read the Atkins book (well, anyversion later than 1979), and makes the same elementary mistake at the nutritionist did regarding assuming what people on Atkins actually eat.

I made those points pretty clearly in this thread and in the review.
