  • Yea! Something that didn't bash Atkins, and a few questions

I was in my local vitamin world the other day, picking up some vitamin E for my recent peircing and saw they had a dual magizine called healthsmart today and physique smart. The HST had an article about low-carb diets, including atkins. I was proud to see a semi-informed article. I was disappointed to see that they did not mention that atkins (and as I'm sure most other LC diets do) suggests that you take supplements. In fact, isn't there a chapter that comments "don't try it without (the supplements)!"

Anyways, the article recomended firm tofu, dark greens, fortified soy milk, light yogurt topped with raw bran and broccoli dipped in salad dressing. Interestingly, there was a sidenote that the dressing should be made with whole, unfiltered, unprocessed veg oil to "keep it healthy" but anyways, what's the stand on soy?

At what point would (could?) you add soy milk and firm tofu? Fitday says soy milk has about 1 net carb per cup and firm tofu has about 2 net carbs per slice. Tofu isn't listed under induction, so I know its not there. I'm guessing sometime in owl, but again, where? What about yogurt? I work at Mrs. Feilds, so I'm sure the cookie fumes have messed with my brain as I cant seem to find it.

Also as a sidenote, it refers to Atkins as a "popular diet" and "wacky" which disapointed me while it refered to a vegetarian diet as "a long term eating plan rather than a weight-loss diet". However, it also mentioned that this plan was good because it forces you to realize what you're putting into your body. I guess I'm just happy and ready to share because its not all doom and gloom when it points to atkins.

Some people say don't eat soy until the "bean" part of the ladder...
But I think you can do it a little earlier if you count the carbs.
Also watch out for "sweetened" soy milk...it uses sugar which has a high GI.
    I buy WestSoy Unsweetened soymilk.

BTW Atkins is also "a long term eating plan"
A lot of us have been at goal for years.
I don't eat anywhere near Induction-level carbs but I don't eat like I used to either.

Imitation cheese products are not allowed, except for soy or rice cheese but check the carbohydrate content.
Soy cheese is what we now call tofu so it is allowed as one of the cheese on induction.

Other soy products would become 'legal' on the legume rung of OWL.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

For some Soy is a bad alternative when I eat soy I feel horrible and have to up my thyroid med drastically, so if you have thyroid issues I would steer clear of soy it's not a good thing.

Tofu: as Elizellen mentioned it's the "soy cheese" in the acceptable foods list. Dr. Atkins New Carbohydrate Gram Counter confirms that tofu is acceptable during Induction. There's alot of soy cheese confusion nowadays. Prior to 1990, tofu was called "soy cheese" because the process of making tofu is similar to making dairy cheese. Around the mid 90s vegan companies began making an imitation dairy cheese product made from soy. That has become known as "soy cheese"---dairy cheese flavored soy cheese. Tofu and soy milk carbs vary brand to brand and tofu type to tofu type. So you have to be aware of it.

There is a health caution about soy. There have been many article touting the benefits of soy protein in a diet. And these articles have been based on studies that have looked at the Asian diet. What these articles DON'T mention is that the Asian diet is high in fermented soy products. Furthermore, these articles don't mention that there are studies that have shown soy to interfere with your thyroid function, causing it the thyroid to slow its function. Atkins Diabetes Revolution is the only low carb book, to date, that I have read that mentions this soy-thyroid link.

Yogurt can be added during the Dairy Rung of OWL.

Yep, ditto what Sarah said. I steer clear of soy almost completely. Occasionally, I will have some of DH's bread with some soy in it, but most people who are hypothyroid do not want to consume any soy, as it will make the situation worse. People with normal thyroids should also not consume soy in excess, in my opinion.
