    Re: I feel kinda lost

Hey, glad to see you are a fellow Texan now!!! Ok HEB is awesome and their prices are usually pretty good. Super Walmart is good as well--watch for circulars in the mail from all the local super markets and take them to the Walmart, they honor competitors sales. Most places have prepaired food areas where you can purchase a whole roasted chicken. I always buy whatever steak is on sale, take them home cut them in half and freeze seperately. Salad is somewhat expensive, but again check the circulars they are on sale often. Look at several different Walmarts if there is more than one in your area, they do NOT have the same pricing from store to store. So happy you are here. If you need anything just ask.

Hi and welcome to the good ole U.S. of A. I'm sure you're are going through some culture shock, which is quite common when you move to another country. Figuring out how everything works is pretty daunting. Heck, I even find most grocery stores confusing and I grew up here. Just give it time and things will get better.

Try and find several stores that you like and get familiar with them. Often different chains have different food products and different layouts. Be sure to check newspapers and flyers you get in the mail for store sales and coupons.

Discount member clubs, like costco, sams and such are good if you want to buy items more in bulk and willing to pay for the membership. Alot of the times, you get some really good prices and goods this way. Walmart and Superwalmarts are often good too, for department store goods and some food products at a decent price.

For meat, don't be afraid to visit the fish/butcher area and see what options they have. They often have some decent items.

Also, check around your area for any local farmer markets or Whole / Natural Foods places. They can often have some better quality meat and veggies.

Most places are pretty helpful if you are willing to ask for assistance. Don't be afraid to explore a little and just browse various stores to see what they have to offer. You can make some very interesting discoveries in some places, and even make some new friends.

        Re: I feel kinda lost

I'm in Canada, and I can tell you when I shopped in a Kash and Karry grocery store in florida on my vacation earlier this year i was totally blown away by the amount of brands. I can see how a person could easily become intimidated there. Even I did (the dept stores were not better ).

I am on a budget too, and i find the weekly 'flyers' that come out to be great for finding the best prices. If you don't get them delivered to your house, most large chain stores usuallyhave them online. I go through mine every weekend, and I write down who has what on sale (and clip any coupons, though i'm famous for losing them LOL). I save alot of $$ this way. I make sure I don't go too far out of my way (or it's not worth it). I find the big chain grocery stores seem to kind of rotate what's on sale, one week one has great meat sales on, the other has veggies , etc. I'm sure with time you'll also learn what stores are better for different things.. and you'll be used to it in no time.

Congrats on the move and good luck!

          Re: I feel kinda lost

Welcome to our part of the world! I can only imagine what you're going through now living in a foreign country. I have travelled in Europe, and know how confusing things can be, and I only vacationed there, while you are actually making Texas your home! Take things slowly, it's a gradual learning process. Experimenting is part of the process, so go for it, you will be trying things that you would never dream of, and will probably like some, and dislike others, everything from what grocery store you shop in, to the type of foods you buy. And if there are some things you can't find, maybe you can have them shipped over, or bring some with on your travels back home. I still load up my suitcases with certain food items that I cannot get where I presently live, when I go back home to where I was brought up, and I only moved about 3,500 miles across Canada, in the same country. Enjoy discovering & exploring, and before too long it will be easier and become second nature!
