I started a poll like this in the over 50's section, but that is quite a small group. A separate poll in two age brackets might yield some interesting results. How long did Atkins dieters hold onto their youthful shape (or feel the situation as within reasonable bounds) or did they never have a youthful shape? Is the early onset of obesity more frequent in those born more recently? Not an exhaustive statistical analysis, but it might be illuminating.

Re: Over 35s - At what age did you feel you had lost control of your weight?

I never had control of my weight until I started Atkins. I was born weighing 9lbs, which is quite heavy for a Filipino newborn. Apparently it had something to do with my mom being diabetic and having high-blood sugar levels. So sugar has always been my bane since even before I was born.

I grew up at a time when overweight children were considered to be healthy children. At the slightest sign of weight loss, my mom would panic. The first real effort I made to lose weight was around 2nd grade because I was really getting tired of all the teasing I got.

My hormones started kicking in when I was 10... so did my weight problems.

I never really thought of my weight as being a problem untill I was 25, that's also the very first time I started some kind of diet.
I might have been overweight before that time but I just didn't care about it, but I guess if the question would be when did you start to be overweight, now that was way earlier, I was chubby as a kid already.

Re: Over 35s - At what age did you feel you had lost control of your weight?

I found an old journal recently i had when i was about 25, and in there there's an entry 'i better start watching what i eat i'm up to 128' LOL. apparently i didn't heed my own advice. 5.5 yrs ago (at around age 30) I went to weighwatchers, and was myhighest weight ever, 153/155 lbs. I had absolutely no idea that's how high it had got. it was then the diets started (and 3 unsuccessful attempts at WW). The most i ever lost was the first time i did WW i lost 15 lbs.

            Until now of course.

Re: Over 35s - At what age did you feel you had lost control of your weight?

I grew up with a mother who was always saying things like "we big people shouldn't wear plaid, shouldn't do this, that or the other thing", so it seems like dieting and weight have always been foremost.

Of course, whenever my sisters got really thin, my mother applauded it. When I first moved out on my own and went (nearly to the point of anexoria) from a size 14/16 to a size 7 in a month (between labour day and cdn thanksgiving), my mother thought it was great (as did I at the time). I didn't eat healthy - I just ate enough to barely sustain myself, and not faint.

My weight has yo-yoed through my married life, as well. I didn't realize how much I had gained until my doctor suggested a low carb menu would help with the cramps during TOM. When I actually started melting the weight off . . . then I realized that I had become out of control

For me I had gained and lost weight all my life but I really just got on a gain 10 pounds a year thing when I got to be 30 and that's when I feel like I lost all control. Before that I was able to gain a few pounds and lose them easily enough. But after 30 I just could not lose them anymore and keep them off. I might lose 20 or so pounds but they would come back plus 10. I can count them up too 140 pounds I need to lose I am 43 at approximately 10 pounds a year over the last 13 years. It adds up pretty well there. The more the years and pounds added up, the more I had to lose, the more diets I tried and failed at, the more out of control I felt.
