    hello everyone!

You know most people I come in contact with are genuinely happy and excited for me when they see the weight melting off. Most are very curious as to how I lost weight and want to talk all about it.

But (as most of you probably know) there is a small, small segment of the population who at first try to be nice, but it's obvious that there's an undercurrent of jealousy (almost leading to rage) that they just are not able to hide. Weightloss, it seems has a dark, sensitive underbelly. Much like politics and religion, I'm learning more and more that it's a highly personal subject that makes some people uneasy and jealous.

And it's amazing how close-minded some people are! I mean one moment you're standing there in front of them listening to them admire you for losing mucho pounds, but the moment you mention HOW you lost the weight many people immediately dismiss your methods as a kooky! It's amazing to me (especially when the person you're talking to is 75 lbs overweight) that people are not more open-minded and willing to listen to someone who's in the process of actually doing it!

I have to laugh when I read your post because I am an Atkins snob and just as closed minded to other folks way of dieting as they are of mine. I have a friend who lost 100 pounds on WW and I am totally amazed that she did it...And everytime someone is on another plan, I kinda stick my noes in the air. LOL

I find people like that to be hilarious. I know someone who has harrassed me about HOW I lost my weight since I started and she is STILL harrassing me in an oh so subtle way... yet she started south beach 2 wks ago. Guess she figures maybe there is some credence to it even if it is a watered down Atkins. I just laugh at em and keep on doin my thing. Can't nobody in all their jealous fat ignorance steal my thunder.

MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY! After nearly 4 years on Atkins, I get very little criticism these days!

The people I tell (I haven't mentioned it to my family yet as I won't see them til Christmas and I'm hoping to surprise them) are a bit dubious too, but its because they don't really know anything about it and arn't willing to find out, so I just listen to all their advice on how I should diet, then I smile and say I'll stick to Atkins. They usually give up after that

                    Re: weightloss is funny

I ran into an acquaintance in the grocery store that I hadn't seen for awhile. She asked me how much weight I'd lost and then she said "Wow! Well you know what they say about diets, you regain 1/3 of your weight loss in the first year and 2/3's of it in the 2nd year. And it's true cause it happened to me!" So I said "Good thing I'm not on a diet then!" haha (because of course this is a lifestyle change!)

                      Re: weightloss is funny

{{{househunter}}} You are such an awesome success on this way of eating so far!

I think there are so many ways to lose weight which are effective, and it's so harsh for people to pigeonhole Atkins (as an example) based on arbitrary information put out by a biased media who still focus on the 1970's version of this way of eating.

Yesterday I spent some time discussing Atkins with someone at karate class (I'm not in it...my kids are) and she was genuinely interested in knowing more about this way of eating. I'm sure I bored her with details and glycemic index discussion. *l* I'm always thankful when people are receptive.

I tend towards the Socratic approach: this means, start dicussing how healthfully you are eating and that you eat anywhere from 3-7 cups of fresh veg a day and stay away from processed foods.. You drink water, exercise, and you're a hottie all the way, baby... start where there is common ground. Afterall, who's going to disagree with healthful eating of veggies and exercise? THEN when you say you're doing Atkins... it's all about the and and "Can I borrow your book?"
