  • A strange craving.

So I'm out on my bike and nearly home after about 12 miles on a fairly windy day, and It pops into my head:

    "I really fancy some porridge"

Now very occasionally, pre-Atkins, I would have porridge for breakfast, but this is distinctly odd. Do I put it down to "just one of those things" or is my body trying to tell me something? "A few more carbs please!"

Yesterday was a lovely day, so I made the most of it being half term, and cycled 35 miles. I ate 2000 cals and 90 g carb yesterday, slept very well and woke up hungry. I must have been in serious deficit yesterday and this morning the scales bettered a previous low by 1/4 lb.

Well, what do you think (Betty and 2Big) - my body giving me a little hint. Why porridge of all things?
Atkins didn't say 'Calories don't count',
    he said, 'Don't count calories.'

a little memeory lesson here.( now where is wannabe to sing background for me) memories can be triggered by many many inputs smell, sights, words, tastes, events, so were you experiencing a slighty chilly day like you would when you used to eat porrage for breakfast? seeing leaf color change reminding you of cooler weather? smelling some wonderful baked smells, seeing a home that reminded you of boyhood porrage eatting days?

Then there is Dr Brain prescibing cures for what chems it detects. you will need further study to see if it was the chems and needing more carbs or the meemories. Glad you didn't just bolt down a bowl of porage though

35 MILES!! wow.. that's awesome... and yeah.. with that kind of physical stuff.. you HAVE to have more carbs..

I've had kinda the same thing happening lately.. here in the NE Georgia mountains.. apples are a big deal... and I've been craving apples... fresh, crisp, tart, apples... and I've had some....

they're pricey as far as the carb content... but it was one of those 'had to have it to stay sane' things...

my Granny always said your body WILL crave what it truly needs.. (not just what it wants.. I mean.. I used to get CRAVINGS for peanut butter... and I'm not even especially fond of it most times... but she said there was SOMETHING in the stuff I needed... that's why I began to crave it... )

      oh well...

porridge... what exactly is that? (sorry I'm not real good with different foods etc.)

I think that's true - when I was pregnant I was reading about cravings and how they're triggered by our body needing something - like a mineral or vitamin - it went into lots of detail even covering the crazy concrete eating ladies and what their bodies where trying to get - can't remember where it was (online somewhere) but it was really interesting. Perhaps there's something in porridge - because it doesn't strike me as a very exciting food to be craving

I'm with Peytonn, what the heck is porridge, anyway? We Yanks only know it as something mentioned in old British nursery rhymes and fairy tales.

Porridge is made from oats - a good Scottish dish.

            http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.u...ipes/porridge/

I just made some porridge with 20g oats, 60ml water, 60ml milk and zapped it in the microwave.

A little salt, but no sweetener.

            6-7 g carb

            thought I deserved it.

Well within my limits and a low GI carb.

Oh, Oatmeal! We eat it all the time, we just don't call it porridge. I shouldn't be surprised, I guess.

                Re: A strange craving.

oatmeal is a great OWL rung 9 food and I have it as part of my Atkins WOE but I don't eat a food just cause my brain thinks it wants it. If you are deficient in something lok at your fitday and see in the reports section what it is and get it back in to the normal range. there are many micro nutrients in foods that we don't know about but our brain from past experience with that food and being deficient before remembers about and prescribs it for you.

                now about that milk...

Oh I squawked out loud when I read this! lol

About month three of Atkins, I got SUCH a hankering for oatmeal! I just wanted to smell it more than anything, but I did want to eat it too. I don't even like the stuff! I would buy it in the past because I would think I really wanted to eat it, but after a few servings I'd wonder what the heck I was wanting it for.

In OWL now, and I'll throw a tbs into a bowl of yogurt and let it soak it up overnight and serve with fruit and Torani sf vanilla....really good!
