  • The start of the holiday food at work

So here I am at work and there is candy and donuts everywhere. It is the start the the eatting bindge at work that will last through New Years Eve. I find that work is the place with the most temptation. And when work gets busy and demanding it is so easy to eat that chocolate just to get you through. And of course it is a holiday...all the more reason to eat it!! Only 25 more minutes to my dinner break (I work in a hospital) thank goodness!

You can do it Brenda! Just think of those sweets as something evil which can harm your blood sugar and throw you off induction completely! Then you have to restart all over again and what a pain it is to wait 2 days again to get back into induction! You can do it, Resist! Resist!

Re: The start of the holiday food at work

Thanks guys...I made it to dinner break. I don't think there will be any problem with me making it. I sometimes wonder though about people bringing so much sugar into work; I hear other workers saying things like "oh no" or "I shouldn't be eatting this junk, I'm going to feel aweful by the end of the night". I just really wonder if one is doing their co-workers favors by bringing in unhealthy food to eat.

I also work in a hospital and it was ridiculous today with the candy around. Thankfully I am not into candy so it was no big thing for me to avoid, but very unfair to lots of other people, particularly with goodies right next to the copy machine. It seemed to be everywhere and there will be tons more in the months to come. I vow to stay strong as well.

Hospitals should be setting an example

I would think hospitals would be setting a good example by having healthy stuff around to eat, but my cousin is a nurse and she has some of the worst eating habits ever. I know, that is crazy coming from a 260 lb. woman, but seriously, she eats more fast-food than anyone else I know. She should know better. Two years ago she had the stomach reduction surgery and lost down to 140. She has since gained 60 back and the doctors are telling her she is in danger of rupturing her little pouch cause she has stretched it so thin. I think the thing about that surgery is that it sure limits what you can eat, but it doesn't address the issue of why you ate in the first place. OK, that turned into a rant for the evening. I am sorry!

Re: The start of the holiday food at work

There's going to be a lot of things popping up this holiday:

So here are my ten ways to hit major success this Holiday season!

              Let's go!

              1. Social eating doesn't have to be all about the eating. Face it! We eat with people as a celebratory event! so when we're around them now we have to shift from feeding our tummies to feeding our social need to be with others.

              2. Tradition isn't always good. You ALWAYS eat Aunt Mahetabel's Plum pudding. You always have pumpkin pie. You always... Just because we always did it doesn't mean we're going to do it this year, tight ladies?

              3. I wasn't prepared and the cookies seemed harmless. There is going to be so much available food that it's important to always be prepared! You don't want to fall back on what they're bringing into the office.

              4. Exercise. It reduced stress and keeps you mentally sharp!

              5. Tackle things a little at a time. Stress eating can be brought on by the smallest things when they're allowed to snowball. Make an effort to do a little each day and keep the overwhelming stress from tempting you with the office cupcakes!

              6. Do something nice for you. Buy a magazine as a reward. Paint your nails. You deserve to be pampered! Don't forget yourself this holiday season while you're busy taking care of everyone else!

              7. Start a new tradition by getting friends to go walking at lunch. Instead of standing around the cookie plates, you're bringing friends together and celebrating health rather than food.

              8. Random Acts of Kindness are sweeter than sugar. Now is the time when people get glum. due to lack of sunlight and motivation, coupled with the onslaught of the holidays, now is the time to leave flowers for an ailing friend, or send an anonymous note to someone letting them know what they mean to you.

              9. Bring in your healthy foods to share. Veggie trays go a long way to show people there are alternatives to the Christmas Crinkles!

              10. Wear a snug-fitting clothing. It will remind you how far you've come, and that your waitline will mind if you don't mind your waistline.

              We can do this!

I work from home, but i travel into the office (it's 50 miles from here) once/twice a month. I pick up a couple of dozen doughnuts or 3 dozen Timbits (doughnut holes) and bring them in with me when i do. Obviously, I don't eat them, and i don't force anyone else too. It's convenient, and inexpensive, and well, I don't hear anyone complaining. they all get eaten, and everyone seems pretty happy when i show up with them. At Christmas I always bring in a box of gourmet chocolate cookies or chocolates. They're not eating low carb..they want doughnuts..they can have them, if they don't want to eat them..i'm not forcing them too? . This is my woe, not theirs. I have learned to bring in my own snacks, and to avoid them.

Maybe if enough people from your office is grumbling under their breath about all the junk being brought in..you should discuss it? Maybe you can suggest that everyone make suggestions of what to bring in (healthier snacks)..and you rotate who brings what? or have the food moved to another area. If my coworkers asked me to pick them up bagels rather than doughnuts, or to bring in a veggie tray, i wouldn't be offended (though it's highly unlikely i'd go to all the trouble to make a veggie tray unless it was a special occaision, potluck etc).

Re: The start of the holiday food at work

When I worked in a hospital, during the holidays there were always boxes and baskets of chocolates, pastries, cookies, fruit (!), etc. Even where I work now, we'll begin to get the baskets, hampers and tins of fruit, cookies, and other stuff.

I'm in OWL, so I can eat the fruit. But the rest of the time, I make sure I bring some kind of "snack" food: cheese sticks, veggie sticks, etc.

You might also want to try Dr. Atkins trick for cravings----500 mg of L-glutamine.

I wrote this last January. You might be wise to think ahead NOW:

                      Vicious Cycle

In January, all the news is talking about is which DIET works. Well in my opinion, no DIET works, if it is just a DIET.

What works is when you decide to make it a permanent LIFETIME lifestyle change.

Of course, when I first started, this certainly was just a DIET to me... to get the dumb weight off and see if it would work.

Well not only did it work, it worked well. And I ate REAL FOOD, very often (sometimes as often as every 2 hours if hungry).

After seeing how well my body responded to this way of eating, then the mindset changed to 'this is my LIFE', not a dumb DIET.

Anything worth having is worth working for, for life.

The media doesn't talk about DIETs during pig out time between Thanksgiving and New Year's Eve. All we get 'fed' during that time is all the crap we are 'supposed' to be pigging out on because it's the 'holidays'.

Then all of a sudden when it's January, it's DIET time. Only for the same foul cycle to be repeated next year.

We don't have to feed into that mess. I never will again. 2004 was my first year not ever feeding into it and it was the most amazing thing. To actually face a January being THIN. Then to repeat it again January 2005 and be smaller than I ever have! I have not been this weight since around 6th grade.

In November and December, the BUZZWORDS (you know, the 'in' things to say):
*Have you finished your holiday baking yet?
                      *What all are you baking?

HUH???????? Who said anyone HAD to bake for the holidays??

In January and February, the BUZZWORDS:
*I need to lose some weight
                      *What DIET are you on?
*What GYM do you go to?

HUH? You weren't sayin that 2 months ago! Why put yourself through the drama?

                      In November and December:
                      FOOD DOES NOT EQUAL family
                      FOOD DOES NOT EQUAL friends
                      FOOD DOES NOT EQUAL love
                      FOOD DOES NOT EQUAL giving
                      FOOD DOES NOT EQUAL peace
                      FOOD DOES NOT EQUAL happiness

In November and December, FOOD DOES EQUAL FUEL

In January and February (till Valentines Day pig out time):
                      FOOD DOES NOT EQUAL punishment
FOOD DOES NOT EQUAL starving so I can get this weight off

ALL YEAR ROUND, food equals fuel.
                      ANDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD..................DRUMROLL PLEASE...

ALL YEAR ROUND, our low carb food fuel is delicious, satisfying, AND lets us lose weight or maintain, ALL YEAR ROUND, for life.

So if this is your first January facing the daunting task ahead (it is not daunting-- take mini steps, one day at a time), let it be the last January you do this to yourself. Let it be YEAR ROUND, including November and December.
Keep doing what you're doing & you'll keep getting what you're getting!!!

I feel your pain, literally! It’s a food fest here all year-long, it is really hard to say no to all that crappy food. I now look at it Literally like poison. It won’t make you feel good and it will make you fat, so how can it be good?

Stay strong and make sure that you bring Atkins-friendly snacks with you and keep them in the fridge.
