  • Should I be taking a calcium supplement?

    My mother is very supportive of my new WOE, but she is concerned about my calcium intake. She has osteoporosis, therefore, she worries. I told her that I get at least 2 cups of dark green veggies every day and I eat 2 oz. of mozzerella cheese. I can't have other cheeses because of yeast in my system. Do you think that I should be taking a supplement too?

    Right now I'm taking Centrum Silver multivitamin. I was always a huge milk drinker pre-Atkins so I think that while I'm losing weight it isn't that big of a deal. When I'm on maintenance I will make sure that I get more low carb dairy.

    Even with the amount of dairy i get daily (i'm on OWL so i get more..yogurt, ricotta etc) i still take 1500 mg calcium suppliments a day. calcium is very important for women, I think especially if you have osteopirosis in your family (my grandmother had it as well)

    I also read that you should not take more than 500 mgs of calcium at a time..which is why i take it 3x a day. your body can only absorb 500 mg at a time, it flushes the rest.

      Yes you should be taking a calcium supplement daily. I too take 1500mg a day, as directed by my doctor. It is very important for us woman to have the proper amount of calcium in our system. I also take multi-vitamins which contain some calcium as well.
