Hi All, Just wanted vent ! if you feel like adding or advise please do . I went to see my dietican and she said i shouldnt be on Atkins , because the diet is bad . Forget the fact that i lose 7lbs in my first week of induction . Apparently that was in my imagination as that was all water. Now I have been going downhill with my diet and motivation since . I am fed up off myself ( why do i listen !) . I am sorry to trouble everyone with this its just that i have been on every diet known to man and forum and you guys are the most supportive and warm bunch i have come across .

First of all does your Dr understand the diet. Has she read the book? Many have an idea that is wrong. You need to show her an induction days food. If she still feels it is bad you are eating 3 cups of vegis a day and no sugar maybe you need another Dr.

      Re: I need support

The first weight you lose on Atkins IS water weight, but once thats come off, them the real weight comes off.

Everyone has their own opinions of the diet, and more people seem to be against it than for it, because they aren't open enough to learn more about it.

At the end of the day, there haven't been any studies that I'm aware of that have proved Atkins to be a BAD diet. It't the only one thats worked for me, so my advice to you would be to keep going at it. Give it a month and see what comes of it. If it doesnt work for you, you've not lost anything but a few pounds lol. Nothing else. You can move on. But everything's worth a try, and if you've lost 7lbs already, you're well on your way!

I estimated that I lost 7 lbs in water weight. 3 weeks on, I've lost 20lbs and I'm down an entire dress size, and even thats getting loose on me!

If you're happy trying it, I wouldnt listen to your dietician. Many of them are old school and set in their ways, and they refuse to open up to new ideas.

Congratulations with your weight loss so far though! That's brilliant!

        Re: I need support

This kind of "advice" burns me up. First of all, almost all of the so-called dieticians who say these things have little or no knowledge of the program. They may know a little bit about induction, and think the whole program is just that. You have to remember that they have years of training that says that fats are bad, carbs are good.

On Atkins I eat more vegetables, per day, than I ever did when I ate "normally." My blood pressure, as well as high cholesterol and triglycerides dropped to low normal. I have more energy than I had 20 years ago, and I feel great.

Hundreds of people who've come through ADBB will atest to the fact that Atkins has improved their health, trememdously; and some even claim that the diet has saved their lives. I say that any dietician who makes remarks like yours, without really knowing so much as the basics of the program, should just be told to get stuffed!

Do get back on the program, and refind your initial enthusiasm. Be sure to drink your water, and take proper supplements, and you'll actually be doing something wonderful for your body.

I'd find a new doctor who will work with you. I can understand if a Dr said the grapefruit diet was harmful etc..because that is one of numerous "fad" diets. Dr Atkins advocates clean eating with whole foods. If your doctor is hung up on the food pyramid way of eating, it's because the food pyramid encourages diabetes...and guess where the money goes when patients need check up and prescriptions? Right into his pocket.

Dr Atkins stated in his book that if your doctor does not support his way of eating, find one who will. My last doctor wanted me to switch to South Beach. I asked him if he read Dr Atkins, he said no. I now have a new doctor who is THRILLED with my plan and my numbers.

Good luck and don't listen to him. Dr Atkins is a wonderful plan, and if you stick with it, you'll be healthier, lighter and more confident than you are now!!!

I say that ALL the time!! I was taking 18-20 units of insulin TWICE a day (following the American Diabetes Association diet which had me eating 200+ g carbs/day) when I started Atkins back on 12/1/03. After six weeks, I had lost about 10 pounds, but I was down to only TWO units of insulin twice a day. My doc said that wasn't even worth stickin' myself for!! She said, "Whatever you're doing is really working, so keep it up!" She took me off insulin and I haven't been back on it.

I often tell people that Dr. Atkins, Dana Carpender and my best friend (who sent me 3 of Dana's books as an early Christmas pressie in November 2003) saved my life. I say it because it's true.

Thanks to you all . Atkins diet is the only diet that i have been on and not got bored . She said that the diet used to be fashionable some years back and its not anymore . Strange as it may seem my doctor ( different healthcare professional) 3years ago firmly approved it !. Thanks for you advise , I am slowly but surely getting out of a rot .

If I went to school and paid to learn all about the food pyramid and whatnot and graduated based on my knowledge of that, I'd push it too.

Add to that that I'd be pretty determined to bad mouth anything that fell outside of that realm because God-forbid I spent all of that money and all of that time learning about something that may not actually work for everyone! *GASP* In fact, I think it would scare the bejeebers out of me to think that what I had spent all the time and money learning about was a load of garbage.

                But that's just me. *grin*

You've gotten some great advice in here already. I just wanted to wish you success!

My advice to you is get a new dietitian and LIVE.

I got mad at my Dr., so I fired her. (yea, you can do that) My blood sugar is 'positively' under control, including my A1C steady at 5. I have lost 65 lbs, and I have been off meds since 2003. My blood work is so good I have been advised to sell them on Ebay.

I am now faced with a new side effect MY FEET SHRANK 1 FULL SIZE, I am trying to find shoes that fit, what a pain. I guess they were fat too.

I am joyfully WOLFL, I could go blind or suffer from kidney damage if I cheat. Honestly I can't afford the medications I would have to take to eat a high carb diet. If I get bored I will simply create something new to eat.

                    Hi Ebony,
I really suggest you read Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution. Then you can decide for yourself whether 'this diet' is bad. And many of us don't view it as a diet at all, but rather a way of life. I know I do. Diets do not work- never will.
Keep doing what you're doing & you'll keep getting what you're getting!!!

You know Ebony, I thought that Atkins was also going out of favor and it worried me because I know it works......but then I look at THIS BOARD and see 700 posts in one day and new members joining everyday and I know that it is still viable, it is still good and the reason folks come back to it is because IT WORKS.
Don't let the naysayers get you off track, if you need some encouragement check out the Before and After Pictures, Check out the great things that are being done in Century Club and just look at all the weight that the folks on this board have lost. The Second Time Around Club members will ALL tell you that they fell off and then returned to what they know works. The proof is in the pudding, so to speak.

                        Ebony,

I have found that if you tell a person you are on a low-glycemic diet (fancy word for low-carb) they are much more accepting than they are when they hear Atkins. I had an overweight doctor tell me in the ER last night that Atkins would kill me...blah, blah, blah...and eating refined sugar and flour is SOOOO much better, PLEASE! I eat whole, unprocessed foods and actually have cut my diabetes meds in half, lost 51 pounds and I exercise daily (ok, not now, but I have a broken foot), but the proof is in the low-carb pudding so to speak. Find yourself another doctor because my own family doctor has read the book and other than telling me not to eat steaks every meal (no one does that anyway) she has been supportive of the diet for me as a Type II diabetic.

I read an article on Saturday on some new medical research that found eating protein temporarily turns off the liver's desire for sugar (it was technical and there was more in it than this) and sends a message to the brain that you are no longer hungry. We eat lots of protein on Atkins and for the first time in years I am not constantly HUNGRY!

Tell the dietitian to go and do something rude in his/er hat and go get a new one.

My doctor back in Canada recommended Atkins to me when I went to see him about losing weight. That was before I moved here overseas. That doctor has known me since I was 5 years old, and knows all my previous health problems, etc. I didn't really have any health problems, but basically knows my body inside well.

I think you should try another dietician and try another one. Do you need a dietician? I mean being on Atkins and if you plug your info into Fitday, etc etc, you shouldn't need a dietician? (Unless its for another health reason or something). Just stick to this diet. I read the Atkins book every night before I sleep just re -read the chapters and I feel I know and understand his principles and theory behind this Way of Eating.

Please give it another chance, and don't let ANYONE stray you away from this way of eating! Just remember that many people come from the old school where low fat is in for dieting and oh my gosh how can you eat fat while trying to lose weight - type of hype from them.

Remember we are here for you!! And you've seen so many success stories just from alone, that you have no reason not to trust this way of eating.

                              Take care !
