I love challenges between members, and I'm in one right now with someone at the board!

They are motivating, fun, and it's a situation where everyone wins! I think it's a good thing!

      Yay Betty and Brian!

I am bemused about what this challenge could be - I would die before I got anywhere near Betty's weight; and running, she could never catch me, even if I was cycling on my on my old heavyweight bike.

I am 12 inches taller than Betty and 7 years older.

              Re: APB: Labarum/Brian ... over ...

There was a case recently of a marathon runner who set off for central London at the same time as a car driver. The marathon runner got there first.

But a cyclist can easily maintain 20 mph for quite long periods, sadly a runner cannot.

Something to do with the efficiency of the wheel!

Runner and mountain biker might be more equally matched through the woods, but I ride a road bike. You would beat me on such a forest track - I would either get bogged or break a wheel.

                Re: APB: Labarum/Brian ... over ...

Well, I am sure you could beat me on a bike .. cuz my butt is far too bony to ride one these days! So I am reduced (pardon the pun) to running ... I'm not really into speed, but rather, distance .. so if you're up for it, come on down here to Florida, say .. next August .. when the humidity is enough to stifle your breath and you can sweat standing still .. AND YOU'RE ON FOR 13!

Oh, I am quite sure you would win on those terms!

More seriously, Betty, I guess the equivalent challenge to you running a marathon would be a fast day ride of about 100 miles.

In UK we call them "Audax." In USA "Brevet"

                  see

I am not ready for that. I could probaly do 50 without too much discomfort as I regularly go 20. Come the spring and on a new, lighter, properly fitting and reliable bike I will push out a bit.

But I have a long way to go yet before I achieve your fitness.

                  Who started this anyway?

My hearts desire - a classical hand built British Audax Bike.

I am tall and have odd proportions so a custom built frame is needed.
