  • I can't afford to be on Atkins

because it actually works! After I finished the initial induction phase, my old pants were literally falling off of me. So, as a reward for making it past the first two weeks, cheat free, I bought myself a new pair of jeans. They were a size smaller than I had been wearing initially. Two weeks ago (4 weeks into it) THOSE pants were literally falling off of me. So, I bought myself a NEW pair of jeans, yet another size smaller. Today, I had to go buy myself yet ANOTHER pair of jeans, ANOTHER size smaller, because the ones I bought two weeks ago are threatening to fall off any day now and there was a sale on the jeans I liked. I made sure to get myself a belt this time Which brings me to my next YAY moment...I can FINALLY fit WOMEN'S belts!!!! I no longer have to pretend I'm buying my husband a belt when I'm really buying it for myself because none of the belts in the women's section fit me. (I really hate having a wide, flat butt that doesn't hold pants up! )

I was really mislead by your subject line (I've heard that tired old excuse too many times.) Anyway, I'm thrilled that your wallet is lighter because you're having to reclothe your lighter body! It's true that we do have to spend money on new clothes as we get smaller, but I've yet to hear anyone actually complain about it -- except with tongue in cheek, as you did.

    Congratulations on your wonderful success!

Like Chris I too was misled (YEA!) I was ready to give you the Atkins can be cheaper lecture. I had to go buy a uniform for work. I only bought one because I am hoping it will be too big soon.

I think we can all relate to that downfall of being on Atkins. But, I'll take baggy clothes anyday instead of tight clothes that I'm bursting out of. SMILE

Re: I can't afford to be on Atkins

Isn't it great?! But expensive! My clothes are all too big for me, I had to go buy trousers as it was getting ridiculous.

Y'know, before I started Atkins, i was a 40 waist and they were tight on me! I couldn't tuck anything in and there was a real panic in my sould about the prospect of going to a 42. Now that is a real fat size and 40 was hard enough to find as it was!

But now, I'm a 36, which is kinda normal. I guess I'll be a 36 for a while and I'm gonna do my darndest to get to a 34!

Jumpers are too big for me too, I gonna hold for a lil while longer as the weight still seems to be coming off.

Expensive but fantastic and there is no way I'm ever going back to the bad old days!

Re: I can't afford to be on Atkins

When I first noticed how fast Atkins as working for me I realized buying new clothes every so often woud be I waste of money. I decided I would only buy new clothes when I hit my mini goal of 180lbs. It gave me an added incentive to lose weight. I think I have a pic somewhere on these board where my clothes were very baggy prior to my new wardrobe.

I think a wise idea might be to go to Thrift stores and consignment shops to find things until you are closer to where you can wear things for a long time. Also, unless you have to go out to work and need dress clothes, I would try Wal-Mart or something because their clothes are cheaper and you can afford to buy more often.

Re: I can't afford to be on Atkins

I've shifted my addiction to food to an addiction to new clothes! lol

I was super lucky in that my sister and her friend(who is a total clothes horse) send me their hand-me-downs, so I've been given a real break with that. Her friend's stuff is pretty much brand new, too! I've got six pairs of capris that I'll be ready to fit into next summer already from her.

It's something a person gets used to pretty quickly, that whole shopping for new stuff...it's wonderful...

I vowed when I started to lose weight not to buy any new clothes till at goal - so I visit the charity shops regularly and was amazed at the quantity of brand new clothes on offer there.
Last month I bought an unworn full length sheepskin coat for less than a fifth of the normal price!!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

Re: I can't afford to be on Atkins

I have given mountains of clothes away to charity shops, and still have a very full suitcase to be rid of. I have bought some new clothes, but not many. I am wearing clothes I had kept for years . . . in the hope . . . which was realised by Atkins.

My bother-in-law gave me quite a few pairs of trousers in various sizes and I have worked my way down to the smallest waist he gave me. Many of them were new!

My combat uniforms I just exchanged at the taxpayers expense! My dress uniforms I have had adjusted back to where they were 28 years ago.

Many Anglican Priests (Episcopalian) wear double breasted cassocks with a wide cloth belt called a cinqture - that keeps slipping down again and needs a stitch or two to take it in one more time. One of my albs (the long white coat) was made for me at 250+lb - the hem at the front is dangerously low and I have to be careful I dont fall over it.

I am putting off as long as possible the purchase of a decent new suit (or two) - the only one I have that now fits is 25 years old. The DJ (Tuxedo in US English) I now wear is a silmiar age.

I have, however spent quite a lot on cycling clothing, shorts, tee shirts and a few nice shirts.

Ah well, my continued service in uniform and the higher income that brings more than compensates for the expendidture - and my chances of continued service would have been so much less if I was 60lb heavier.

The expenditure on clothes and the (possibly) higher grocery bill were well worth it. And my chances of keeping my pension, which has been enhanced by extended service for longer are greater. Sorry, British Taxpayer, I intend to live a long time on that pension!
Atkins didn't say 'Calories don't count',
                            he said, 'Don't count calories.'

Re: I can't afford to be on Atkins

Charity shops are great for clothes to keep you going for now - and you can always save up for something really gorgeous when you make goal.

Clothes aren't something I personally find motivating but I do love the fact I don't have to go to the plus sizes anymore! I#ve never been much of a clothes horse (at my worst I was a size 20 PLUS) and being small it's not easy to find decent clothing anyway.

Congrats on your loss, and keep the good work going.
