  • An extra 670 Calories

Heard this on a British Radio Station, Classic FM this morning:

in the run up to Christmas the average calorie intake rises by 670 Calories per day.

As I checked the site address

The Most Relaxing Music. Listen live to Classic FM radio online. Discover classical music and find out more about the best classical composers, musicians and their works.

    I came across this spoof:

    Politically-correct Christmas greeting

Please accept with no obligation, implicit or explicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low stress, non-addictive, gender neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practised within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion or secular practices of your choice, with total respect for the religious/secular persuasions and/or traditions of others, and their choice not to practise religious or secular traditions at all... and a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2006, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make Britain great (not to imply the Britain is necessarily greater than any other country nor is it the only "BRITAIN" in the northern hemisphere), and without regard to the race, creed, colour, age, physical ability, religious faith, sexual orientation and choice of computer platform of the wishee.
By accepting this greeting, you are accepting these terms. This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal. It is freely transferable with no alteration to the original greeting. It implies no promise by the wishee actually to implement any of the wishes for her/himself or others, and is void where prohibited by law and is revocable at the sole discretion of the wisher.
This wish is warranted to perform as expected within the usual application of good tidings for a period of one year, or until the issuance of a subsequent holiday greeting, whichever comes first, and warranty is limited to replacement of this wish or issuance of a new wish at the sole discretion of the wisher.

I notice it says "average"!! That means to balance out those of us who don't increase our caloric intake during the season, there must be some who increase it by almost 1400 calories a day!

I believe it! It seems to be the "accepted" thought that EVERYONE overeats in the month of December, like its not the holidays if you don't PIG OUT at every opportunity; sampling every sweet delicacy that crosses your path; stuffing yourself at the diningroom table! No wonder we're a FAT society! Then, on January 1st we vow to lose the weight and exercise .. which subsequently dies out after we realize there is no QUICK FIX....

        Re: An extra 670 Calories

So i'm wondering if this pigging out in december may have anything to do with the age-old thang of "eating a ton before winter so one can survive it" concept that we humans used to -need- to do before we had decent technology to allow us to escape the clutches of Nature in that fashion. Maybe we've been stuffing ourselves at this time of year for so long we'll never escape the genetic programming to do it, and are getting the backlash because we just -don't- have the "lean" times of winter again with not living off the land so closely anymore. It's like we released ourselves from the chains of nature in that fasion and are standing at the doorway, but are either being blind or dumb or afraid or something about stepping through that threshold into conscious good choices made about how we want our bodies to look and be healthy and the maintenance thereof.
