  • Hair Loss Concern

I have read all the stickies and notes on this board about hair loss but have a few questions, that I could not seem to answer. Maybe one of you could assist?

I experienced slight hair loss when I first started atkins. After awhile and changing my vitamins a bit, it got better. But it never went away completely.

I have long hair and I notice my hair comes out when I shampoo. It is not just a few strands but a good amount. I does not come out anyother time, like on my pillow or clothes, just when I wash my hair. I always condition after a wash as well and use very good hair products.

It also seems to be a little dry and lacks shine, so I add a shine serum every day.

Currently, I take calcium, multivitamin, folic acid vitamins. Is there any thing else I can take to help? I read some notes about fatty acid vitiamins, any brand in particular and how much?

I spoke with my Dr as well, and she said it is the large wieght loss and diet style I follow. She was not overly concerned when I showed her the amount of hair that came out.

Can anyone give me some tips on the vitamins and if you experienced this? What about certian foods that can help?

My hair is just not what it used to be when I was a chumby thing and I would like it to go back....

    Thanks in advance!

    Re: Hair Loss Concern

I did a search and came up with sites that gave quite a variety of what is considered 'normal' hair loss: from thirty right up to hundreds per day. Remember that when your hair is long, having five or six hairs in your hand can look like a lot of hair.
Did you read the Hair Loss sticky in the Women's Forum?

I wish I had a magic formula to give you, but I don't, sorry! Keep on with the vitamins and water and use the good products like you are doing.
Also remember it's winter right now and most places are quite dry, and everyone's hair is static'y and dull this time of year.

Thanks Moochie for the tips and advice. By the way, you look great...

I will continue with my current vitamins and water, hopefully this will pass. I still am contemplating adding more flaxseed oil or fatty acid vitamins.

I always have my hair professionally colored and was a blond for many years. With all the concerns with my hair loss, I scaled back a bit on the highlighting. Anything that can help my hair be more healthier is worth trying. I also was going to purchase a deep leave in conditioner as well, to help with the shine and dullness.

      Thanks again!

        Re: Hair Loss Concern

I was having the same sort of issue with my long hair too. I was losing about 15+ strands everytime i washed my hair. I spent from april to november 15 this year sitting at the same weight for awhile, halfway through to my goal and found that after it stabilised the hair loss quit. I imagine now that since i'm back at it hardcore that i'll see an increased amount of loss as i los the last half of the excess weight. So don't worry! provided you're not seriously ill with hypothyroidism (like i am and when it was untreated i lost about half my hair - it grew back once i got on synthroid daily) or something, it'll get better than it is now and grow back.

          Re: Hair Loss Concern

I haven't had the hair loss problem, but I too have noticed that my hair isn't quite as shiny as it used to be, before Atkins. It seemed strange that it should be drier, with the higher fat content of this WOE....

Would like my hair to be as it used to be, but not at the expense of my new slim figure!

Will be interested to hear if anyone else notices this....

I agree, not at the expense of my new body.... but I would like some tips on the shine and dryness in my hair. I have used various products, nothing that has overly thrilled me. Have you used anything that you found to like?

Oh, and I love dogs especially pugs! My pug is so great and I can't imagine a life without an animal in it. They truly add to the value of my BF's life and mine.

Pugs are the greatest! Also have dogs...two big monster hounds!

Can't say I've done much about the hair... sorry not to have any tips. Could do with a few myself. But... talking about animals... mine have great coats! Maybe we should try Atkins friendly dog food! *chuckles*

Are you on any kind of hormone birth control--Pill, patch, Nuva-Ring, shot, etc? When I was on the Patch I had that exact same problem, but I switched back to Seasonel (the "only get your period 4 times a year" Pill) and now not only does my hair not fall out (only about 1 strand per shower instead of 15 or so) but it also is growing in faster and thicker.

                        Re: Hair Loss Concern

I was reading older posts and came across this one.......depending on what color you natural hair is you can lose hundreds of hairs A DAY.....
Also I was thinking that you might have not notice your shedding until you started this WOL.... You might have alway shedding this much...
I would recommend an awesome product to you...it's call Nioxin. I volunteer for the American Cancer Society/ Look Good...Feel Better so I have alot of chemo patient sitting in my chair for wigs fittings and custom cuts......They love this stuff when their hair start to grow back.....
Nioxin helps purge the scalp of toxic waste, debri, dead skin...etc. So what this means is the new hair that is underneath you scalp tryin to push it's way through won't have to work so hard since you have shampooed all that junk off you scalp.....resulting in more hair....
It's awesome stuff I use it EVERYDAY.........
You can only purchase through authorized salons....
It's a bit pricey.....Try getting it around the back to school time they have liter deals that are half the price... I think it's 1 liter of shampoo and 1 liter of conditioner for 40-50 dollars(that's the half price price)...(may vary where you live)
Also, if you color you hair MAKE SURE you get the Nioxin for chemically treat hair
The shampoo is called: Hair Cleanser
The conditioner is called: Scalp Therapy

                        Sorry so long.......
Another thing the scalp therapy is awesome for sinus headaches, just put a dab on your sinuses and it's gone...also good for sore feet.

I LOVE THIS STUFF....It has helped me kept the hair that I have after my stupid chemo crap...
OH by the way...I'm a licensed cosmetologist in Ohio... thought you'd like to know that

                          Re: Hair Loss Concern

When I was successful on this woe before I had a similar experience. It thinned down tremendously and even my husband was concerned with how much hair he saw in the shower drain. I too was very concerned.

But it just stopped one day when my hair felt about half as thick as it used to (in a pony tail-I don't think I actually lost half my hair). People convinced me it was my age (45 at the time) and everyone has that.

My hairdresser also said that she sees a lot of people successful with ANY substantial weight loss (on ANY program) often have the same problem.
