Re: does the weight come right back?

Steve are you doing extended induciton? if you are you should go thru OWL/premaintenace. Atkins maintence is lower fat/higher carb than induction. No one says you have to eat steak/bacon/cheese forever...choose 'better fats' for your fat %'s, olive oils, nuts etc. Your carbs should come from veggies and healthy grains. Have you gone through owl or looked at a sample maintenace menu?

        Steve,

now 'doing Atkins' for 16 days is not 'doing' the plan. The plan as per the book has phases, and once you reach your goal weight there is a maintenance plan.

This is a 'change of lifestyle', Dr Atkins never designed this as a 'crash diet'

To answer your question, then I would say 'Yes'. If you switch to a 'healthy' low fat diet, then yes you will gain the weight back. From my experience, people's weight eventually creeps up on a low fat lifestyle. And my reasoning is this:- they cannot stick to it, because it's not natural and they get too hungry.

You may be 22 now, but you know that doesn't last. If you are honestly concerned about maintaining your weight in the future, you will make Atkins a Way Of life.

Your next step would be to increase your CCL to the
point where you are no longer loosing, and you are not gaining. People even eat bread and the occasional potato like this.

What's unhealthy about fruit, vegetables, meat (either lean or fatty to your taste) ?

What's healthy about pure sugar, white flour ? High Fructose Corn Syrup ?

Excellent point, Dave...one that the Atkins-ignorant &/or Atkins-bashers continue to ignore...

Yes, it's a very good point. Meat and 3 veg was a perfectly healthy way of eating. Why are we all hornswoggled into beleiving that foods made from grains are good for us? What do we feed our cattle to make them fat? Grain! So how come we expect grains to act differently on us? We're not that special.

I'm sorry Steve, those dietitians you spke of are no doubt fine, well qualified people, but they are just as mislead as the rest of us by the big business of the grain and sugar lobbies. Read the book Atkins for Life, if you want to se how to follow Atkins way of life for the rest of yours, and maintain that good health you have been trying to find by doing Atkins in the first place.

Re: does the weight come right back?

I've held my "tongue" on this thread long enough. The part about low fat being health"ier" got my dander up, and I decided it would be best if I said nothing.

First of all, let's look at something. After a few million years of evolution man evolved into our caveman ancestors. What had they evolved to eat? Animals, fish, sometimes bugs, perhaps, and A FEW WEEKS OF THE YEAR, wild vegetables and fruits that they gathered while in season. Cultivation didn't exist, nor did any way to preserve vegetable products.

Because of his intelligent brain, modern man now has carbs easily available in amounts which the human body was never intended to consume. To make matters worse, we've learned to refine those carbs, so that they're starchier and sweeter. We concentrate fruits into juices, with the result that a glass of orange juice contains the fructose from about eight oranges. The result? Well, heart attacks were totally unknown until the first recorded one in 1914, about the time that sugar consumption increased dramatically. Dental caries was unknown to the ancients. Type II diabetes is a modern disease, and is now reaching down to our children. Two thirds of Americans are overweight, and one third are obese. And this is all just the tip of the iceberg!

Man was designed to handle fat and protein in abundance. He was not designed to handle large amounts of carbohydrates, especially in a refined form.

My Mom has been watching her fat intake for years -- it really is a WOL for her. I swear, she uses every low fat product on the market. The result is that she's becoming heavier and heavier. When I was at home for Christmas, I went through her fridge and shelves and showed her that in all of her low fat products the fat had been replaced with sugar in some form (usually corn syrup, or corn syrup solids) in order to maintain a reasonably good taste. I tried to convice her that replacing the fat, that her body was designed to metabolize, with sugar, which her body was not designed for, was just the opposite of what she should be doing. Sadly, she's fallen for the partyline, and still thinks fat is bad.

In my opinion, the low carb way of eating is the health"iest" possible way there is!
                -Chris
