  • Damn you, ignorant relatives.

So this christmas I was determined to get through the day without failing on my atkins journey as last year I adopted a 'christmas doesn't count' attitude and fell off atkins majorally... duh.
I was amazingly brilliant in my choice of foods around the christmas table, swapped all my chocolate related presents with relatives and maintained my diet throughout temptations.
However, my ignorant relatives drove me to the edge. Although I'm not at my goal weight they all believe its time for me to stop losing weight as I am in danger of becoming anorexic. The thought of ME being anorexic is very very laughable!!! They also threw in 'bulimic' in there a few times. I was looked down upon for rejecting my grandmothers apple pie and made to feel incredibly guilty for not eating the majority of the christmas feast. Everyone also commented on atkins as a bad diet and how lack of carbohydrates will make me ill etc etc and although calmly explaining the presence of carbs in veggies no one gave me any moral support.

I wish christmas wasn't just about eating as much as you can.

Eventually I gave in to some chocolate but it was a little piece and I am determined not to let it ruin my state of mind and determination to lose weight. Hope everyone else had more joy around the dinner table!!

LOL, great post. Hey, don't worry about the Chocolate or the relatives. At least you have relatives who love and care for you and thats important around Christmas time. Just think what the world would be like without them. BORING as ****.

I got that a lot until I changed my story. Instead of 'being on Atkins' I was 'living a low carb lifestyle" and if that didn't work, I would simply say that I'm hypoglycemic and I "can't" have that food. Shuts them up every time...

        Re: Damn you, ignorant relatives.

Ignorant people make ignorant comments. Maybe you should possibly just start telling someone in your family while you're all together how to do their job better, and when they tell you that you don't know anything about what they do or how to do their job, just tell them, "Yeah, I know, but it's no more ridiculous than you telling me what's bad for me when you don't know squat about it, either." This morning, I got out of bed and caught my husband starting to inject my ham with pineapple syrup.. I just hollered, if you do that I can't eat it! He got disgusted and walked away, but you know what, I just let him, if he doesn't care enough to get to know about what I'm doing, he can be as ticked as he wants while I eat ham.

It's hard when the poeple you care about make judgement calls like knowing you means they know everything about what's good for you. Don't let it get you down. I got my ham, and I didn't let his attitude stop me from enjoying it without it being pumped full of sugar.

Well, it takes courage to stand up for oneself. I think that is the game so they dont get jealous when you get to your goal. Be proud you came this far.

I find it hard to believe your family doesn't respect your personel decisions and would want to poison you. Glad there are no diabetics in your family geez. Maybe they needed to justify their eating it knowing it was bad for them.

Glad you survived. Maybe you should remind them Christmas isn't about foods and eating.

              Re: Damn you, ignorant relatives.

I've always faced those sorts of comments at big meals. This year, I advised people in advance of what I could eat, rather than what I couldn't. Not that I should need to, but it made everything a lot easier!
Even if everyone did insist on buying me nothing but chocolate this year lol. Best friend, mom, dad, grandma, aunts, uncles, cousins...

I donated them to my little brother and sister. Our dentist is not short of work for the new year hehe

I fully believe that is true!! Not to mention the fact that you're losing weight and they're gaining.

                    Re: Damn you, ignorant relatives.

Coming on my 2 year anniversary of being on Atkins and we received one box of chocolates, a big canister of caramel popcorn and a package of apple cider drink mix and this came from both his and my family...picture me rolling my eyes!
Bf doesn't have a sweet tooth to speak of so we just threw it in the trunk of the car and he'll take it to work for everyone to munch on there.

People think that we can have "just a bite! Nothing wrong with one little bite!" They just don't understand the dynamics of it all.
Some of it for sure is as 2big says, they need to justify what they are eating, and some of it is just simply not understanding the danger of 'just one bite'.

If you mumble and throw out words like, "pre-diabetic", "Whole foods", "organic", "no sugars", people tend to think you've gone all healthy on them. Usually the polysyllabic medical latinates confuse and bewilder, and therefore bring about a quiet state. Quiet is good.

Its annoying that food has become so relevant to occasions!! I'd much prefer some like, toiletries, instead of food as a gift.

I swear if I told my family I was on any other diet I would be met with praise other than the disapproving faces. I felt disrespected.

I have definitely started using terms like 'no sugar' instead of low carb or the dreaded word 'Atkins'!

                          Re: Damn you, ignorant relatives.

I'm writing this just after midnight, so Christmas day has now passed. I'm thrilled to say, that since I'm returning to my own home tomorrow morning, I've made it all the way through two weeks of being around hoards of relatives who each had hoards of food without having tasted even one illegal bite. The reason I'm writing this in this thread, however, is because this afternoon my sister came in with a huge slice of some sort of very fancy chocolate cake that her MIL had given her, and kept insisting that I try some of it. "Just a taste won't hurt you," she said three or four times when I kept trying to explain that I couldn't eat it. She actually began to get annoyed with me, because she said that she really wanted me to see how good it was. I finally told her that I loved her dearly and would do most anything for her -- except eat! That, finally, put an end to it.

                            Re: Damn you, ignorant relatives.

It has only taken my family 2 years to finally come to terms with my Atkins WOL. This year instead of getting chocolate from my parents, I was given some mixed nuts and a selection of different cheeses. (That wasn't my main present, just a few little "add ons". Also I went round to my mum and dads for a christmas meal on Christmas eve, and she had even looked into cooking for the whole family a low carb recipe that she had picked up out of a cookery book. Pork chops cooked with mixed herbs. Then served up with a mixture of vegetables. Including mashed potato, but the potato was on a separate plate! I cant believe it, she has finally accepted my eating!

My mother was the biggest "negative" about the whole Atkins thing two years ago! I guess I have won her around!

I think the moral of the story I am trying to make, is let the diet do the talking. Keep on track and amaze friends and family with your success. That and occasionally drop into conversation that your Cholesterol, Blood pressure and other numbers have dropped

It never ceases to amaze me of how easy and how effective this ***diet*** is!!

I have since re-gained a bit of weight, but that is soon to be coming off again!

Ignore the "just a tiny bit" attitude. Ignore the critics. If people can't live and let live and allow you your own food choices, then they're not worth your attention... at least when it comes to your way of eating, they aren't! Hang in there and they'll all be green (with envy at your new figure) and you'll be full of delicious greens!
