Re: Atkins Morning Start Bars! Induction!!

In the end, it comes down to a personal decision. If you are that pressed for time, Atkins certainly says they are an option. The website created by those trying to sell bars are probably not the most unbiased source for the acceptability. In my head, this diet was about eating as much unprocessed food as possible. Bars were just too close to the old way of eating for me. The possibility of stalls was also a serious deterrent to me. I pre-prep most of my breakfast items the night before to reduce the cooking time.

Again however, it is up to you.

Many of us here consider the list of Induction foods in the 2002 version of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) the final authority on what is and what isn't allowed on Induction. The plan has changed over time, and likely will continue to, but the final publication by Dr. Atkins before he died is likely to be healthiest.

Atkins Nutritionals needs to make money and they can't if you buy one $6 book and nothing else from them. So, they hype their other products. The vitamins are good - the meal replacements, not so much.

It is your choice, but it likely won't be a good one if it's an uneducated guess based on who sounds more authoritative.

One of the foundations of this plan is to maintain a steady blood glucose (and thereby insulin) level. A lot of your benefits stem from that one thing. And you have a lot of flexibility in your choices, as long as you understand what impact those choices have on your blood glucose levels.

In my opinion, for maximum results, you shouldn't eat anything not on the Allowed Foods list (there's a copy in the FAQs) during Induction, and most of the products for sale have something else in them. Whole, 'real' foods are your best option, not only for weight loss but optimum health, as well.

        AMEN LAURA!!!

My personal rule of thumb is, if there are ingredients that are processed, (and I can't pronouce them! ) I avoid them.

If you're pressed for time, how about hard-boiled eggs?

It's also been the collective experience of us on ADBB that the bars and shakes have a tendency to stall or slow weight loss in some people. We don't recommend them during the first 2 weeks of this diet, because it's very important to optimize your weight loss during that time (read Chapters 12 and 13 for the nitty-gritty).

But it's your choice: if you want to experiment with the bars and shakes to see how it effects you, then that's up to you.

I'm also moving this thread to the Main Forum because this is a topic that frequently comes up and most likely will come up during the New Years Resolution rush.

May I jump in... the whole idea about induction is - besides of the ketosis part - to get rid of artificial, industrial, processed foods, to give your body chemistry a break. so you can try out on OWL what types of foods make you feel good and what kinds of food s*** for you, because that's a rather individual thing. I have about a ton of food allergies and I found that it helps a lot to learn to LISTEN to your body, to signals of hunger, satiation or just diklike (yeah, I _dislike_ foods I thought I like and I notice I feel MUCH better without them).

If you eat those bars (you really have to take that decision, and take it consciously), you lose the chance to learn about this genuine reaction of your metabolism, They won't hurt you, I guess, but as Betty said - if I can't pronounce it I'm not going to eat it. ;-)

Umm, the Atkins company is trying to make money. You are trying to lose weight permanently. You decide which is most important.

Just stick with us. You will find that collectively we have more experience than anyone at Atkins.com. We don't have any reason to hawk stuff as our paychecks are not on the line.
