This BBC Article on Internet use makes intersting reading

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4555370.stm

In the US (at least, and I expect in the UK too) frequency of internet use is about the same for men and women, but they use it differently.

The study concludes men use the net to learn new ways to do things, women to maintain human contacts.

For a few weeks I have been thinking about how men and women on this board have different expectations and use patterns.

    The board has two purposes:

    (1) Technical advice.
    (2) Emotional support.

I think (in general) the women on this board assign at least as much importance to (2) as to (1). Men neglect (2) and concentrate on (1)

    What do folk think?

(Most of the folk who answer will be women - proving the point )

Re: How we use this board

I think any delineation by gender lines is problematics by default. While generalities may exist, the specifics often do not conform. I know Betty and Megs are super technical, and I enjoyed (and still do) a number of the relationships I have built here. I (or my masculinity) wouldn't classify that as necessarily emotional support -- I would say my frequency of visit was not for how many cups of peppers I could have today. There are certainly a ton of examples of examples that prove the rule, but here I am the exception, respect me.

Sorry it's my day off, and I am getting ready to celebrate.

While I guess to some extent you are right, (hey, I'm female and proving your point) another point is that I would not want to differentiate essentially between support and what you call technical advice. It is just another form of support to give "technical" advice. But, of course, I'm a geekette, so I don't count fully as female (or so I've been told )

I think there are exceptions to the rule but for the most part it is right. At least for me. I stay for my friendships I have made here.

Any analysis is most interesting and informative at the point it fails.

          Keep the opinions coming.

Re: How we use this board

I use the board mostly just to get information because as a male I know that most of my posts will not get answered. I see where people look at them but there are never any answers. So I take a why bother attitude for the most part. I don't tremember which one it was but on my third or fourth post I had two girls trying to convince me I was someone from Montana whom they didn't like. I think it would be great if the MOds would check my ip and tell the young ladies that I am who I said I was but I doubt that will happpen because no one answers my posts..

Geez how hard can it be to tell me whether or not you think it is a good idea to put the removabel Geroge Forman grills in the dishwasher..That was my last post..

My whole point was maybe the reason men use the board differentely is becasuse no one will answer..

Interesting Dash - I have the opposite expectation - that there will be too many threads and too many answers.

Dash, I would have answered buddy,
                  but I don't have a dishwasher and
the only George Foreman Grills I know of, don't have the removable plates. Then again I live down under!

Re: How we use this board

Hey Dash I googled "george foreman grill removable plates" and found this for ya.

" Removable plates are dishwasher safe and have George Toughâ„¢ Exclusive Scratch Resistant Triple Tough Non-stick coating. "

Yeah, it bothers me to ask a question on a BB and get nothing, even though 28 people looked. I just have to remind myself that they may not know for sure and a wrong answer could cause an accident. I was pretty sure you could put the plates in the DW, but I did check just in case! If I ever need to know something I Google it! I used to Google my dates names just to see what came up!! *g* You just never know what you can find on the internet!

Back on topic, I use this BB for both answers and support. It is where I met my Teammate Aystlyn, and we do real well together. I would probably still be putting off exercising if not for her, and I know for sure I would have been slugged by now if it went for our Good Morning PMs!
But I definitely used this BB for info since I started Atkins before my book arrived. It allowed me to stay on track. And because there are so many "No BS" people here I got straight and truthful answers, even though sometimes they were totally not the ones you wanted to hear!!
I would think men come for emotional support (as well as info) too, but call it something else, like "bonding"...

Hummm, I'd love to know where they got the 6000 people that participated in this survey. It sounds like a 1950's version of 'how do you use the internet'...their findings don't fit into my use of the internet or many of my friends and family.

For me...I'm a combination of the male and female 'use' pattern...information and support!

Re: How we use this board

I initially used the board for information, but having been here for a very long while, having read thousands upon thousands of posts, and having read DANDR several times, I really no longer have need for that purpose. I come here, now, mostly to help support those who are new to this WOE, and, also, for emotional support -- if that's what you want to call it. I enjoy celebrating the success that others attain, and to encourage those who are discouraged. When I have similar needs, I look here for them, as well.

Of course, being a gay male, perhaps I'd be considered a bit more sensitive than the average guy on the street; so, emotionally, I may fall somewhere between the genders.

Dash, where did you post that question? Was it in the appropriate section of the board? I just got a George Foreman with the removable grills, they are in the dishwasher waiting for me to turn it on for the first time, so I'll let you know how it worked. My last George Foreman did not have the removable plates, I actually liked the old design better so far.

I use the board for both types of things. However, after having been on atkins since may of 03 I don't have a whole lot of need to ask questions about what I can eat or if I can cheat etc etc, so I mostly use it to communicate with my online friends and to share recipe ideas! Initially though I used it all for information.
