  • Nursing a monster cold...

any carb free suggestions? I have chicken soup starting on the stove... just was hoping for some inspirations my fogged brain hadn't thought of...

I wanted cream of wheat so bad when I woke up this morning. It always felt so good on my throat in the morning. *sniff*

Add ginger and hot peppers / chiles to your soup and grab that vitamin C.

A hot bath with essential oils? Inhalator?

Foodwise, there's not much I can eat when I catch a cold, except for soup.

    Get well soon,

I am just getting over a cold. I had a hard time driking enough. Extra water should help you feel better.

If you dont take any medicine, take enchinea herb. Try fresh garlic chopped up.

          Re: Nursing a monster cold...

Thanks all. I am taking my regular daily, I don't have any straight C or echinacea in pill form and I am not going out to get any. DS has double ear infections and the same cold. He is on antibiotics and honestly, the thought of getting me fully dressed and him fully dressed and going to the store just seems more than I can do this morning.

So, being sick is a real test of your will power. I could have eaten my weight in oatmeal or cream of wheat this morning. I did make flax bread toast and have it with cream cheese. The chicken and vegetable soup is coming together, I just need to debone all those chicken thighs and chop up the veggies. Today's veggies are jicama, celery, turnip, cabbage, fresh broccoli and onion. At the end I will through in the rest of a nappa cabbage so it doesn't get cooked to death.
Thanks again for all the well wishing. You guys are awesome.

                Re: Nursing a monster cold...

Oh my, I've got a cold right now, too - I get one about every 3-4 years or so, and for me, coughing is the worst part of it. I'm talking every 5 seconds; it's a nightmare! This is unfortunate, because I have always been a big refuser of medicines, aspirin, prescription drugs - unless it's life-threatening, I'd just prefer my body to tough it out on its own. I'm a vitamins-only kind of girl. No herbal supplements, energy pills, alcohol, smoking ... but I digress!

Sugar-free cough drops may work for others; but for me, I stop coughing only for as long as the drop is melting in my mouth. To top it all off, the aspartame in the drops give me the poots! As for sugar-free cough syrups? I'm still coughing. I once tried Tylenol with Codeine back in 2002, and it worked wonders for my cough when nothing else did; I may consider requesting that my doctor prescribe me the narcotic analgesic if my symptoms don't subside in a day or two.

                  Re: Nursing a monster cold...

The soup turned out great and soothed my throat.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I am unable to take artificial sweetners cause they have always made me very quizzy and sometimes physically sick. I can do splenda if it's a half of a packet. Luckily I have a sensitive tongue and can pick out sweetness in foods, so I don't miss sugar very much.

Shiela, I am like you in that I usually refuse medicines unless it's antibiotics or the like. I am much more of a "feed a cold" kinda girl. Since I am a Soup Master, that's what I whip up.
Today's soup ended up containing 8 chicken thighs, rosemary, fennel, thyme, savory, lavendar, salt, fresh cracked pepper, jicama, turnip, celery, diced tomato, broccoli, cabbage and mushrooms. And a couple of chicken boullion cubes just for alittle more chicken flavor. I made alittle over a gallon so it should last the weekend.

                  Thanks again!!

                      Oh! But there's more ...

I also refuse antibiotics. However, I am making the exception, because about an hour ago, I got pink eye. It sounds so unrealistically sudden the way I describe it, but that is how the symptoms came about ... like a freight train. Great, now this, too?! Just in time for New Years' Eve! lol Well, I ran out and bought the product below tonight, and it hasn't done a thing so far ...

So, I'm off to the general practitioner in the morning at their opening hour; I'll be the one with my cheek and arms pressed up against the glass going, "Open, open, open ... "

My recommendation for a cold is ColdEeze tablets or lozenges. They always help knock back the cold into something endurable for me. Don't get the flavored kinds -- get the diabetic-safe version -- no sugar or sweetner or effect to your blood glucose level. I highly recommend them if you can find them.

Sorry to hear your feeling so under the weather too, Sheila.

to sooth your throat you can feeze somew cremcheese cut in 1 ounce cubes and rounded. suck on them and a cold helps cool your throat and the cream cheese does its Atkins thing and the pleasure sensors in your mouth get worked out too giving you some yummy brain chems to feel better too.

You can also make popcycles out of any legal beverage you drink. or just suck on ice chips too.

A whole gallon of soup should be a great fixer upper too.
