I know that the Atkins diet has evolved over time - all this talk now of 'net' carbs. There are many products out there that have low net carbs, especially things like Ross chocolate bars that are made with sugar alcohol malitol. Has anyone who has been successful in losing weight use these products or do you stay away from them?

Re: Sugar Alcohols
I have used these products and lost some weight.
Products like sugar free chocolate and the atkins advantage bars.
But I believe I've come to a point where they are now a problem.
A two-fold problem:
1. I have an adverse effect from eating them (a run to the toilet effect)
2. I believe that the hidden sugars are having an impact on my weight loss
Initially I didn't have these problems.
My advice is always this when someone uses them:
1. Have no more than one bar a day
2. severely limit the chocolate because it's heavily diarrhetic.
I am now moving towards eliminating them from my diet altogether. My ADBB Journal here.

Re: Sugar Alcohols
And if you do decide to use them as part of your menus think about how to count the carbs - many of us count all of them and ignore those 'magic non-counted' carb counts!Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Re: Sugar Alcohols
I'm not climbing back up in that pulpit, again, this time. I will say, though, that if you must eat them, count all the carbs in any product containing maltitol, and half the carbs for lactitol. However, if you're using a product containing lactitol, expect to spend much of your free time perched on the throne.
Personally, I think sugar alcohols are evil, and should be damned to the fires of H*ll.Last edited by Chris; January 3, 2006, 10:48 AM.-Chris

Re: Sugar Alcohols
They cause me to crave and gave me the toots. And may have caused a stop in weight loss briefly. I should have expected it. I mean it was grown in a laboratory and not the earth. Definitely not a whole food. And I have heard that the gummy bears are particularly "evil" to the bootay.

Re: Sugar Alcohols
They make me very, very sick. They are also known to stall some people. Finally, once I get a taste of something sweet, the old sugar demon rears its ugly head and I crave more sugar!Started 4/18/04

Re: Sugar Alcohols
I binge as much on low carb sweets as I would on normal sugar filled candy. My new years resolution is also to totally avoid them.
The rumbling tummy effect is funny... what happens after that isn't.

Re: Sugar Alcohols
I used in the beginning with no problem two bars per day and i lost weight, but then i had to stop eating them because i could not loose weight any more.
I restart eating this chocolates but oh surprise now I can not even tolerate half of one, so they are gone for me.
