  • Sensitive Topic - Hiv+ And Doing Atkins

Is there anyone out there who's following the Atkins way of eating and has been diagnosed HIV+? If so, would you please share what your experience has been like? I am sure there are many who need to know and also need the encouragement. Thank you.

yep we have had several member who were HIV positive beforethey started Atkins that have posted about bettering their health. I haven't seen them active here lately but you should be able to find some on our Rainbow board and you can click to it in the off board sites at the bottom.

That wouldn't surprize me terribly. HIV is a chronic illness and many chronically ill are "malnourished" in the sense that they are nutrient deficient.

Before the low carb food explosion, Dr. Atkins advocated that his dieters eat whole, minimally processed natural foods---because the more a food was processed and altered the less nutrients they contained. In one of his books, he made the very interesting point that fortified foods (like cereals) are only fortified with specific nutrients, not with all the nutrients they lost during the processing. So,the whole, minimally processed food is far more nutritious than it's processed and altered counterpart.

So, if you eat like Dr. Atkins wanted us to eat, you will get those nutrients and they can only help your health (that goes for everyone!)
