    Re: Oh My God...

They did say that my thyroid levels were a bit low. I'll have to give the update when I get all the results. *sigh*

That would be scary, especially if it was a big jump from your previous tests. Please let us know what the doctor's office says tomorrow.

        Re: Oh My God...

        sorry it is church night

        okay deep breath
First thyroid low = high LDL yep as your thyroid comes back into normal your LDL will go down some. How far will depend on your genetics and how off your Thyroid was.

Ask Mother if she is aware that over 75% OF THE CHOLESTEROL IN YOUR BODY IS SELF PRODUCED (sorry dang cap key again)? the oatmeal knee jerk reaction is because of Quakers advertizing. Oat bran will lower it 40% not the 9% oatmeal gets so why not go with something better Atkinswise? Flaxseed meal has the good for you Omega 3s and the ligans that oatmeal has too. grean peas do too. Nuts can ;pwer your cholesterol too. So Atkins eating isn't unhealthy if you are making wise choices.

Exercise can raise your HDL too which should in turn lower your LDL as HDL removes LDL from the blood stream and returns it to the liver for packaging as the bile used to digest the fats. yep eating fats loweres blood LDL too.

Your cholesterol total is made up of 3 components.
HDL the good stuff and having a high HDL can actually make your total look unhealthy as mine did in 2004 when my HDL was over 100 but that was actually great.

LDL the bad stuff but it has 2 conponents a very bad VLDL and a fluffy part so if they did a full panel you may be better then your total LDL looks.

triglycerides are actually fats in the blood and that is what we are burning for fuel on Atkins so that level goes down when you change from High carb to low carb.

Now when did your doc tell you to come discuss this with him? you should wait to make any changes till you discuss your actual results with him regardless of what anybody tells you to do cause without seeing the splints you don't know what needs to be lowered.
Do your folks have high cholesterol?

          Re: Oh My God...

okay now a warning about any info you read on the net about low carb increasing cholesterol. go look at their foot notes and see if they actually have any medical studies to back them up. you will find very few of those Atkins bad for you sites do. There are 3 new in the past 4 yrs medical studies done at DUKE and UCONN that showed that Atkins eaters actually lowered their cholesterol just as Dr Atkisn said they would.

And if you didn't know it chlesterol is very very important for humans to be alive every cell in your body uses it every day as the building material for cellular membranes. without it we would all be puddles on the floor.

if after your thyroid is back in normal range your LDL doesn't come back down to a healthy level then you can make slight addustments to your Atkins fat choices andhelp lower your LDL even more. Momo satursated fats like olive oil and shorter chain fats like those found in butter can also help lower LDL.

                  Re: Oh My God...

This is not to remove blame from potential weaknesses in your eating, but there is a large portion of choles. which is genetically pre-detemined and will not be affected by the food you eat (if it's going to be high, it will be). If your parents both have high choles. you probably will as well. Additionally, contraceptive pills and patches may have the effect of raising it. A combination of these two, as well as not watching fatty intakes, may be a big problem for you.

Mine was tested actually about a month ago, after a decently significant time of being on Atkins and exercising, and was still pretty high at about 175. My mother, however, eats well, is very thin, gets tons of exercise, and takes medicine specifically for this and STILL tests in the 230 range. So it's a tough call. They're going to be reluctant to medicate you based on your age, but this is something you're going to want to watch out for over the next couple of years.

My mom says I MUST start eating Quaker Oatmeal in the morning. Since I'm just maintaining now, would this be alright?
I checked the box. Carbs: 27. Fiber: 4 Insoluable Fiber: 2 and Soluable: 2.
Anyone else eat oatmeal, flax, oat bran or low-carb cereals in the morning?

I eat oatbran for breakfast in maintenance. What is your CCLM. I'm sure there's room for those carbs in there..especially if you exercise.

I believe grains like oat bran and oat meal, wheat bran etc are very important in your diet if you can eat them without issues (some ppl have wheat allergies).

Soryy SpookCity__USA not laughing at you as you already know.

I have grains and have had them since OWL but my CCLL was ovr 110 when i was lifting and HITing.

Just so everybody knows a scientist wanted to study his idea about oat bran so he ask the quaker folk about it andthey at that time couldn't get folk to buy them so it was all going for animal feed. He got some food grade barrels and did his reserach discoved the soluble fiber in the oats did indeed asssit folk in lowering their cholesterol and he published his work. Of course the OAT folk we delighted and stuck it on their boxes and sold lots more oat meal. the gov said hold on prove it in correct medical type studies so they did and they get to use it. other foods have the same soluble bran compound but cause they haven't prooved theirds works they can't advertize it.

Okay going abck to waiting for SpookCity
