    Re: Oh My God...

you can get it in the grocery stores where the oatmeal is sold here.

do you have rolled oats or cut oats there? if you have cut then you have the bran in your oatmeal already.

The soluble fiber in oatmeal Beta-glucan is also found in such foods as kidney beans, brussels sprouts, apples, pears, psyllium, barley and prunes

Almonds and walnuts can lower cholesterol too.

some veggies contain sterols and this compound added to a lot of foods like smart balance can block the LDL making at a single point with no other way around.

Thanks again for all the support! NO, I still haven't heard from him! This is horrible. He has the papers, he just didn't end up calling tonight. Hopefully that means it isn't too serious, or he was just being lazy.
The doctor told me the other day that I may have something called Raynauds Syndrome. It has to do with being cold and the blood vessels and arteries. The more I think about it, the more I feel that it may be in connection to the high cholestrol? When reading online, both involve the circulation of blood to different parts of the body.
I also read that tap water can produce extreamely high cholestrol levels because of the chlorine in it. Tap water is all I drink nowadays.:-[
So this could be a series of issues that caused this.
Thanks for everyone being so concerned, you're all so sweet. I'll let you know what happens as soon as I know, myself.

thank you 2big, I don't have any idea of what is rolled nor cut oats, we just have the regular oatmeal. I am going to start looking for the oatbran, or ask somebody to bring it from the USA.

being cold can also be from your low thyroid levels.

Is that Raynaud's Syndrome? Or... That is an autoimmune disorder. Are thyroid problems autoimmune problems, too? Maybe this call all be fixed with a simple pill. I hope so. I have been thinking about you (and honestly about ME too) all day. I think we all just want you to be okay for your sake though. Don't stress over it. That raises your blood pressure!

Best of luck! Sounds like more tests will be coming up if they suspect Raynaud's. My Mom has that along with Sclerderma and a bunch of other stuff. If the doctor doesn't phone you then you phone him!!! If you are uncomfortable about that (and you should not be) then make an appointment to go in.

                    Re: Oh My God...

                    Rebecca;

Take a deep breath and calm down. It takes years for cholesterol to do damage to your body and heart. Now that you are aware of the problem, steps can be taken to get your cholesterol under control.

First of all be aware that only about 10% of your cholesterol is affected by your diet. The rest is made in your liver. Your body needs a certain amount of cholesterol to function. However, some people have a missing enzyme in their livers and it never shuts down. In other words, such people will have high cholesterol even if they live on lettuce and celery tops.

My cholesterol was just as high as yours, this problem runs in my family. (My Mom passed away two years ago from complications after a heart bypass.) Unlike your doctor, mine was really surprised that Atkins didn't bring down my numbers. She actually took me off of my medication for 6 months, expecting Atkins to lower my cholesterol. It didn't because my liver is a champion cholesterol factory. However, it did increase my good cholesterol. and other good lipids. I got back onto cholesterol medication and now have low healthy cholesterol numbers (I still eat cheese, butter, bacon, sausage, red meat, nuts etc) and unlike my mom, I don't expect to spend the last 30 years of my life dealing with serous heart problems.

                    Respectfully,

                        Re: Oh My God...

Slightly less than half of the cholesterol in the body derives from biosynthesis de novo ( means inside the cells themselves) only 10% comes from the liver in healthy folk

Eating oat bran or any soluble fiber containing the Beta-Glucan type of fiber will only bind with the bile in ther intestines. (It doesn't enter theblood stream and score the plaque and remove the cholesterol there as many folk belive) Binding with the fiber does 2 things.

                        1) bile acids are no longer conserved during the process of lipid absorption through the enterohepatic circulation.
                        2) it inhibits the absorbtion of cholesterol from your foods because they aren't converted by the bile to an absorbal form

Bile is made in the liver from cholesterol molecules so soluble fibers can force the body to make more bile for digestion there by removing more cholesterol from the body

                          Re: Oh My God...

                          Hi mirna05:

It's my understanding that it is the fiber in oatmeal/ oat bran that can help a bit with the cholesterol and that the soluble fiber in wheat bran, rice bran, flax etc is just as helpful. It's just that some companies have spent a lot of money promoting this aspect of their products and encouraging people to assume that their product is the only one that has this benefit. ( something like the products that advertise 0 cholesterol, when the product has never had cholesterol in it)

As for me, I was told by by doctor that only about 10% of cholesterol can be affected by diet. In my case, most of the extra cholesterol is manufactured by my liver. (This may not be true for people who don't have familial high cholesterol) She was really surprised that Atkins didn't lower my cholesterol because it had been her experience that the Atkins diet does lower one's bad cholesterol. If one looks at some of the studies, they also show that Atkins does not have an adverse affect of one's cholesterol levels much to the surprise of the nutritionist and doctors who worried that eating real butter, and animal fat would cause heart problems.

Since oatmeal has a lot of carbs. I generally eat 1/2 cup of flax seed meal for breakfast each morning. It has a lot more fiber than oats and 0 carbs once one subtracts the fiber. I don't know if this is helping or not, because I also take a Stanton drug to control my cholesterol which is in the middle of the healthy normal range now. ( I believe if my Mom had been able to lower her cholesterol at my age, she would have been spared her heart problems.)

Taking pills daily and having a liver level done every six months isn't the idea solution, but it is the best I have for right now. Along with my healthy lowcarb diet that includes NO transfats.

                            Re: Oh My God...

Sorry it that last post confuesed any body those were the breakouts of the total cholesterol produced inside the body not the total for where it comes from. As xamier stated and others pots in here only a small amount of the cholesterol in our body is from foods we eat.

                            xamier,
have you looked at the natural sterols in soy? they are supposed to work llike statin drugs to block the LDL production and they can be had on Atkins. I was wishing I was not allergic to soy when i read the studies about it.

there is also a study on an acid in barley that interfers with liver production of cholesterol but it only works if your liver is making too much and not your cells too. Manufactures are adding barely to many foods for that cholesterol lowering effect of both the acid and the Beta-Glucan
Hey SpookCity_USA how did your search for the oat bran go.

Thanks betty and 2big, your comments are very helpful, I am very concerned in this issues. I believe in natural ways and not medication. But if nothing works, there is no other choice.
This information is very valuable for me, soy, apples, flax, omega 3-6-9, oat bran, that would do it, if the liver is working right.

I have to re-read this posts so I can understand it better.

It is good to know that there are some natural alternatives to Stanton drugs. Honestly though, I am a little afraid to mess with my medications since they are working well and I am having no side effects.

What happened to my Mom was pretty awful. It wasn't just loosing her, she made it through the surgery and her heart was okay, but due to being on the heart lung machine, her insides died (kidneys and intestines) It took a few days for her to pass. She never woke up. Needles to say, this experience has made me very aware of what long term high cholesterol can do and determined to keep mine under control.
