  • What do I do with this tofu?

I've always wanted to try tofu and bought a package of extra firm yesterday, but I have NO idea what to do with it or how to do it! lol Anybody have any suggestions? I know I can search online, but I wanted to see what y'all do first.

Lots of ways to prepare tofu....

Pammie once wrote in Japan, they serve cold cubed tofu with soy sauce and sesame oil on top.

I like it cubed and put into those brothy Asian style soups, like hot and sour soup.

Cube it and saute it in oil until golden brown all over. Then add stir fry veggies.

Crumble it and saute it in butter add chopped vegetables for a "mock scrambled eggs" dish.

Here's a thread I posted long ago about using tofu as a bread substitute:

You can use the soft tofu as as smoothie base (whirl it in the blender).

I have a recipe at home for BBQ tofu that's really delicious, even the kids and hubby likes it! However, it's made with fresh tofu, not the silken kind.

With my aging memory, the recipe goes something like this...

With the fresh tofu, you freeze it for a few days, then you need to let it thaw. This changes the consistency of the tofu. You then flatten (put it underneath some heavy pans) the tofu to squeeze out any excess liquid. The tofu is now ready for cutting. You can either go for short strips, cubes, or whatever shape you want for the BBQ. A friend of mine even cuts then long ways as a fat, fake-noodle. Place the tofu in a slow-cooker, or a sauce pan on low with your favorite low carb BBQ sauce. Basically, you're just heating the tofu until it gets heated through.

I'll look around for the recipe at home tonight.

Cool, thanks! Those all sound good. I'm actually got the stuff for stir fry so maybe I'll try that first.

I mainly use tofu in my shakes. All it does is bulk them up and add protein - of course, without adding/taking away any flavor. The big blocks I buy only have a grand total of 4 carb grams.

Will do. I'll probably make it tonight or this weekend.

Sheila.. how much do you add to your shakes?

I'm kind of excited about this. I hope I like it. lol There seems to be a lot of different things to do with it.

Tofu will take on the flavor of whatever you cook it with!

Re: What do I do with this tofu?

Well I tried it yesterday in stir fry. Not much taste, but I liked it. DH didn't like the texture, so he mashed up the cubes to mix in better. I'll have to try other things now. So much fun!

I was just looking up tofu recipes about half an hour ago and came across this site:

                    http://www.recipegoldmine.com/tofu/tofu.html

One that sounds interesting to me is 'crispy tofu strips' not sure how crispy they get? I'm going to try that one out though.

I've had tofu that was cubed and fried in oil before being added to the stir fry or whatever and I really liked it. It reminded me a lot of french toast, of all things. I've never done it myself though, but I'd like to give it a whirl.

I cubed mine up and marinated it overnight in soy sauce and some low carb teriyaki sauce. Then I stir fried it with veggies. Not bad.

Mmm yummy! I'm getting hungry lol. I didn't marinate mine, maybe that's why it didn't have much taste. I just threw it in the oil that I had cooked my steak in and let it cook for a few minutes. It didn't pick up a whole lot of flavor, but was good nonetheless. (I didn't really know what I was doing! rofl)

Jen.. thanks for that link! I'll have to try some stuff. I love adding new foods to my diet and this seems pretty versatile.
