  • Opinion on Meat

Hi, I'm fairly new here, my first posting. I did the Atkins WOE a few years ago and lost alot of weight. Tried many diets in between and nothing worked so I'm back at Atkins again.

Just curious about meat I've heard so many negative things about eating meat. Like the hormones they shoot into the chickens and the antibiotics they give the animals and how that passes to us when we eat meat. Also how meat I think especially red meat is hard to digest and takes a long time to pass through you etc.

    Just wanted some feedback
    Thanks

you can buy organic meat. it's a little more expensive but worth it to not have all those nasty chemicals and hormones added!

      Re: Opinion on Meat

As a former ConAgra employee (Butterball is our brand), I can tell you that most poultry grown in the US does not receive growth hormones. Most frozen and fresh chicken are harvested from a RossXRoss or RossXCobb male/female combination. This selective breeding results in a 4 pound chicken in 50 days from hatching with a corn meal and fat feed base with basic vitamins added.

On top of that: I try to just not worry about things like that, cause if you have to believe 'them' almost everything makes you sick and you'd be better off not breathing. Sometimes it almost seems like some research results report some new disease found from something we eat every day, fish has too much this and carrots too much that and chicken too much so and so and pork too much blablabla etc etc.
I just decided to stop worrying about it.

                  Re: Opinion on Meat

                  Digestive qualities of red meat....

Your ability to digest anything depends on how well you break it down into smaller pieces. In other words, if you chew twice and swallow biggish chunks of food, it will take your stomach acids longer to break it down into smaller pieces. Whatever you can't breakdown, like fiber, passes out the other end. But this is a double-edges sword because if you don't properly digest nutritive foods, you don't get their nutrition.

Different food types take longer to fully digest due to the chemical composition of the food. Fats take "longer" because fat digestion is a 2 step process. Carb digestion is faster, which is why eating fiber helps to slow the digestion and absorption down.

So, chew your food thoroughly in order for you to ease digestion and in order for you to get the most nutrition out of your food. This will also help you self-regulate your appetite by 1. allowing you to savor and enjoy your food so you won't be likely to overeat and 2. it takes about 20-30 minutes for the stretch receptors in your stomach to tell your brain "Reaching capacity. Stop eating." so again, it will decrease the chances of overeating.
