  • "(tsk) Oh no! You're doing the Atkins *diet*? Be CAREFUL...."

I was chatting with a good friend of mine today. I mentioned that I was giving the Atkins WOL another go. I am on day 15 of a planned extended induction. I feel great and have energy.

Anyways, she gasped when I told her I was following Atkins, and said "(tsk) Oh no! You're doing the Atkins *diet*? Be CAREFUL....I have heard some really bad things about that diet recently. I hear it is REALLY bad for you!"

I wanted to get on my soapbox and enlighten her, but in that situation it would not have done any good. So I simply said to her "Well, like all things, you have to do your research before forming an opinion. If you'd like, I'll lend you my DANDR book."

She quickly declined and we went on to talk about other things.

It is such a shame that so many people are quick to buy into the first sensational media story they hear. I think there are a lot of people out there that would be helped by this WOL, but are too brainwashed and scared to give it a chance.

I am so grateful for this board. It gives me strength.

I totally understand and can relate to that.

When I started my new job in November, we all went out to eat to get to know one another and they noticed what I was eating (steak and steamed veggies) and needless to say we got on that conversation. I work for a group of doctor's so you can only imagine the feedback I got.
One person had said "My mother got really sick on that and she was put in the hospital". I thought Suuuuuure OK! But didnt want to fight with em! lol!

I hate it how people judge something before they know what its about.

Good idea about asking to read up on DANDR, atleast then they would have another side of the story!

Yes, it has been really bad for my health, NOT! My BP has gone from 176/96 in mid-November to 122/80 last Saturday, and I am just over 50 lbs lighter. Sounds really dangerous.

I love that! I'm not very good with confrontation and I get sick of people bashing LC, so I just tell people that I watch my carbs to keep my BG under control. It's funny how people don't question that. lol

Susan, you handled that perfectly! That's always been my strategy, to figuratively throw the book at them and say that there's no way we can possibly discuss the diet if they haven't read the book yet.
              Well done!

I told a friend what plan I was on and she said "Oh, good for you, but don't stay on it too long!!"...that was almost 2 years ago...lol

That's awesome! I bet Lambeau is a great place to go. I'm a Cowboys fan, but I'd love to visit Green Bay one day.

LOL, all of that reminds me of when I first started out on Atkins, all those many moons ago.

I have found the best way of dealing with the negatives is letting the weight loss and the figures obtained from the doc re blood tests is the best way of keeping them quiet.

Studies show that 100% of people following Atkins eventually die.

It's true. I read it on the Internet.

The Senior Medical Officer who nudged me into Atkins said at my last medical.

"I have never seen anyone's blood pressure come down so fast."
Atkins didn't say 'Calories don't count',
                          he said, 'Don't count calories.'
