  • Frustration...Help!

I have been on this WOE for a long time. I have been on maintenance since abt Jan of 05 and have held my weight pretty much the same ever since. I did gain a few pounds thru the holidays but no major weight gain. My husband on the other hand decided he was not going to watch his diet over the summer and ended up gainig abt 25-30 lbs. We started induction about 2 1/2 weeks ago and have not lost more than 2-4 lbs. The first time around I lost 18lbs in the first 2 weeks. I am insulin resistant so checking the keto stix does not work for me. My husband has checked the keto stix and is only showing a trace of ketosis. I am doing a clean induction but I cannot vouch for him.
Why am I not losing ?

you have less weight to lose this time around so each pound will represent a bigger change in your availible to lose fat.

When you say maintained did you maintain eating Atkins or just maintained the scale number?

if you just maintained the scale number then you will be needing to again rev up your metabolism and get that extra insulin being produced shut off. WHat happened between the loat time 16 pounds gone and this time that caused you to become insulin reisitant?

What are you doing for your exercise part of your Atkins?

I was insulin resistant before I started dieting . I have been maintaining my weight and basically sticking to Adkins. I have other physical issues that limit my exercise ability so I don't get much. I get more in the summer when I can get in the pool. I lost 65 lbs before going on maintenance with no difficulty and I'm not doing anything different now than I was then.

Good for you doing Atkins maintnenance eating and maintaining your loss. What was your CCLM? so this time when you did the return to induction you didn't have the high glycogen reserves folk have from their high carb diets to shed as fluid pounds.

also the lack of exercise is effecting you now too. any indoor pools in your area you can use? We have several therapy pools and when your doc writes a script for that kind of workout cause of health issues insurance pays the bill.

Are you still insulin resistant after all this time eating Atkins?

I live in the middle of nowhere so there isn't anywhere close to me that has an indoor pool. I guess I am still insulin resistant. My Doc says that if I have no reading on the Keto sticks that I am.

            Re: Frustration...Help!

Ask your doc for some supporting liturature about that.Cause ketostix are known to give false results about ketones simply because they only test for one type of ketone and only report results in concentration not if they are their like preg tests do.

Ketones exist in the human body in 3 types: acetone,beta-hydroxybutyric acid and acetoacetic acid

Ketostix detects only acetoacetic acid and, therefore, produces false negative results if only acetone and beta-hydroxybutyric acid are present in the urine.

there are many other ways the stix can give false negatives too as they measure the concentration of that type of ketone not if it is present at all.
Many ADBBErs don't get any change on the stix and are big losers.

If you are really concerned that dispite eating Atkins for this long you are still insulin resistant ask your do to test you for it so you can get it fixed medically since Atkins eating isn't correcting it if you still are.

As 2big said, many of us dont register on the ketostix - I only ever did when I was seriously short of water, but have lost nearly half of my original weight over the last 30 months.

Save your money and buy a nice steak instead of those bits of plastic!!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

I know you're experienced in Atkins WOE, but since you're starting induction again, it would hurt to use fitday to track your protein/fat/carb intake. Perhaps there's some hidden carbs creeping in, or too much protein compared to fat?

If you don't mind, perhaps you could post your menu the past couple of days. Maybe someone can spot something that you've overlooked food-wise.

it's true you shouldn't be to worried what the sticks say...one thing i did find out recently with them though is make sure they are newer, less than 6months old, or they may not work at all.

I think I have found my culprit. I have been taking sublingual b-12. As I went to take it yesterday I began reading the ingredients. Under other ingredients the first one was grape sugar extract........duh!!!! Grapes and lemons are both very high in natural sugar. No more b-12 for me for a while!
