  • Will I undo a lot of my hardwork?

I've come down with the most horrendous flu! I've been sent home from work today because of it, because I was useless there!
I was coughing so badly yesterday and had a really bad swollen throat, and my boss went out and he bought me some cough syrup - diabetic, none the less lol. but my cough's gone now and it's just my sinuses and my glands that are being problematic now.

But now I'm home, there's no way I can go out to get anything (plus it's 9:30 on a sunday night) and I'm stuck with Lemsip, and it's so full of sugar I can smell it! (shows what Atkins has done to my senses haha - I can sniff the difference between regular and diet soda too!)

Based on experience or opinion, am I going to undo my hard work by dosing up on this stuff for two days? Tomorrow, I'll force myself out to get some other stuff, but it's an hours drive so I'll have to really be up to it.

I realize that this is my health, otherwise I wouldn't be drinking this stuff, period! I just feel so guilty and scared that I'll step on the scales next week to see that I've gained an extortionate amount of weight!

    Someone, please reassure me!

Personally I wouldn't worry about. If you have no way that someone can bring you some sugar free meds then I would just take it and rest. You probably won't be eating for a few days so I'm sure that the sugar won't cause you any weight gain. The important thing is to get better. Do you have any chicken broth or anything that you can heat up and sip on? I'm sorry you are feeling so icky. I have only had the flu once and I hope I never have it again. Do make sure to see a doctor if you get worse. When my daughters and I had the flu a few years ago we weren't better after a week and went to the doctor. All three of us developed pnuemonia as a secondary infection from the flu.

Thats the bad thing with flu, you can get pneumonia so easily. I've ended up in hospital a few times with it so I know to keep careful.
Luckily my lungs arent too bad this time, like they have before, so I'm really sweating it out at home lol (heating on full blast, plenty of hot baths and hot drinks!)
But if I'm no better by Tuesday, I'm going to call my dr for a prescription of Amoxycillin or Cephelexyn to shift it

Re: Will I undo a lot of my hardwork?

I was able to do a little research about Lemsip, here's what I found.

Total sugars 2.6g in a base including ascorbic acid (vitamin C), aspartame (a source of phenylalanine), caster sugar, pulverised sucrose, citric acid, sodium citrate, lemon flavour, saccharin sodium and curcumin.

I would not feel too guilty about amount of sugar in there this evening, however, there are ton of other flu remedies that may have less sugar that your mom or boyfriend could pick up for you tomorrow if you wanted to hold off.

For example, there are vitamin C powders that you place in water that fizz it up and have about 1500% of what you need on a daily basis to help fight the illness (EmergenC is one, Airborne is another) and then to prevent getting sick. You also might want to try decaffinated green tea (or any kind of decaff tea) for something hot and steamy to open up the sinuses, and green tea is legal and has plenty of healing properties.

There is NO WAY you are going to gain back your weight. Just concentrate on getting better and tomorrow send someone off on an errand to get something just to ease your mind. Take plenty of hot showers and baths and drink lots and lots of water (as per usual). I really hope you get better soon!!

Oh thank you so much! You're a lifesaver haha.
I'm on my own at the moment, so nobody is around to pick anything up for me I'm sure I'll be ok to drive over tomorrow to get something though.

Thanks for your help! It's very much appreciated.

Steph, I sending you a hug! hope you are on the mend and feeling better soon. It is most important to take care of yourself right now. I have been sick on this WOL and haven't gained any weight. I think everything balances itself out. Drink plenty of fluid, get lots of rest and feel better! Chriss

              Rest up Steph,

              As kellerbomb said:

Calcium Asorbate is some of the best stuff to get!

You'll be okay, concentrate on getting better, then worry about dieting later!

Re: Will I undo a lot of my hardwork?

Thanks everyone! I was hoping to go out today and get some stuff but I feel so much worse today that yesterday! My head is throbbing because I was waking up so much throughout the night and sniffling, so I've settled for a low carb hot chocolate instead to keep me warm lol.

Thanks again, and hopefully I'll be better soon! I should be back in work wednesday but if I'm not better by them, I'm not even going to risk it!

OH! And I stepped on the scales this morning, and I've lost a lb, so I'm off my plateau (which I've been on since early December!) regardless of whether I gain a lb or two hehe

Re: Will I undo a lot of my hardwork?

Get well soon Steph, flu is NOT fun. Don't worry about your WOE for now, just get yourself well and once you're back on your feet properly get right back in there. Trying to eat right when you don't feel like eating at all isn't going to make you feel any better mentally so don't beat yourself up over this.

                        ::hugs::
