  • Farmer Cheese??

Is farmer cheese okay, or not?

I know it's a whey cheese, and the book says no whey cheeses.

BUT --- the farmer cheese they sell at my store has 0 carbs, some fat, and like 5 grams of protein. (That's for a one-ounce serving, of course.) I can't see any reason why it wouldn't be okay??? But, I'm not sure if there was some other reason for avoiding whey cheeses, other than that they would normally have more carbs? It seems like at zero carbs per ounce it would have to be better than a spoonful of sour cream which has two carbs per ounce??

    Re: Farmer Cheese??

I just found my DANDR so it says cottage cheese, farmer's cheese and other fresh cheeses are not allowed during induction. If you are sticking to the rules of induction I would says then its a no. If you are on OWL then it should be OK.

Munster is a nice mild cheese that I like

Yes you are both right - no whey cheeses on induction. If you love them then it is only a wait of a few weeks till you can add them in the dairy rung of OWL and see if your body can tolerate them

If I recall correctly these kind of cheeses contain milk which has not gone through the aging process that the allowed cheeses have done, so contain too much lactose for induction.

I am sure someone more knowledgeable will correct my statement if I have misunderstood the reason Dr Atkins said not to use these cheeses on induction, but i didnt want to leave you in limbo till they come along!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Dr Atkins based on his studies and the stuff he collected from his patients eating his plan for over 40 yrs knew what foods gave new to Atkins folk the most trouble and eliminated then from his program for induction. On rung 2 of OWL you can see if that farmers cheese has any effect on your craving control or not.

Oh okay, so the lactose in the whey is a hidden sugar. So it's there even if the serving quantity is small enough that the carbs don't register, and it's still a sugar. Yeah that makes sense, I get it. I don't want to be eating that right now. Thanks!
