  • Yep, More Kudos For Turnips!

Okay, so y'all know how much I've learned to love turnips as a replacement for potatoes .. but!

DID YOU KNOW THEY MAKE TERRIFIC HASHBROWNS?

Oh my goodness .. what a treat I had for lunch today. Shredded turnips, some chopped onion and green pepper, a 1/2 tsp of garlic, some salt and pepper browned in butter .... About 15 minutes before dinner, I added about 6 teaspoons of ro-tel diced tomatoes with jalopeno peppers ... CAN YOU SAY TO DIE FOR?

Less than 4 carbs in a CUP. GOTTA LOVE THOSE TURNIPS!

What a novel idea, making hash browns with Turnips! I've missed hash browns so much, I think I'll have to try that!

    Thank you hehe

        OH MY GOD!

I'll have to try making some of those... the idea of having some turnip hash browns with 3 slices of bacon first thing in the morning--can you say delicious?

I did turnips for breakfast too! Diced real small and cooked in butter with chopped onion, green pepper, green onions, garlic powder, salt and pepper...YUM!

Shredding is a great idea too, need to get more turnips.

I love turnips too...weird since when I was eating high carb junk I would never eat turnips voluntarily, let alone look forward to them...lol

Do they soften like potatoes (or get crunchy?). I've never eaten a turnip before!

                  Turnips soften.

They're like... potatoes with a "golden" flavor...

or at least that's how they taste to me.

Yes, turnips soften. They are virtually the same consistency as potatoes when you peel them, but a little softer. They cook down faster than potatoes too. Some people find them to be a little bitter at times .. and if you do, try a 1/2 tsp of Splenda sprinkled over them before you cook them. They make excellent scalloped "potatoes" too .. with cream cheese, butter, heavy cream, bacon, cheddar cheese, etc. YUM!

Becca, I know what you mean .. before Atkins, I didn't even know what a turnip looked like!

Oh and BTW, turnip greens are great cooked with bacon!!

You know what else is good like potatoes Kohlorabi, a little less bite than turnips. My mom grew some in her garden and i also bought some at Mejers a supermarket with a large produce section. They are a vegetable which is actually related to cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli and almost identical in carb and fiber counts to turnips. per USDA counts per cup kohlrabi 8.37 carbs 4.9 fiber 3.47 net/turnips 8.36 carbs 4.94 fiber 3.42 net. Heres a picture
