  • fell off the Atkins wagon

Yeah, Superbowl Sunday did me in. I knew what I was doing, but did it anyway and now I'm miserable.

I was on day 24 of extended induction, and had lost 9 pounds...feeling great!
I had been looking forward to the game, and planned on having a few drinks (brandy and diet ginger ale) which I knew wouldn't be good, but I planned on sticking to the diet, no chips or popcorn or breads, no bad carbs.

To make this short, I ended up eating peanuts, rice pudding, a slice of pizza and 5 cookies. Probably over 200 bad carbs.

This morning I gained 3.5 pounds! I feel awful. It was not worth it.

Any advice on how to get back on track? Should I do 2 week induction again? How long will it take to get back into ketosis?

I'm so mad at myself. Stupid thing to do.

First of all, don't feel bad about yourself for doing that. You've done so well up until now, and it's a learning curve. Don't go punishing yourself, just climb back onto the wagon and keep going.

I agree with stephbob, don't beat yourself up to much about it.

You know you did bad, but the next time you will be much stronger as you wont want to go through the guilt again. Cheats often make people stronger as they learn from their mistakes.

It was a speed bump in the Atkins road. You can start over this morning. You know how bad it made you feel, and you will think about that next time you are in this type of situation. Don't berate yourself, just climb back on that wagon.

Life is always going to be throwing Super Bowls, birthday/anniversary/holiday parties in your face and this was just a trial run for the next event.
Remember the importance of planning ahead, as view this as a valuable learning experience.

You could do Induction for a few days then resume where you were.

            *sigh* Back to square one.

Question: how long does it take to get back into ketosis? Will it be another two weeks?

Yup. That big crashing sound you heard from the East was me. Falling hard off the wagon. Actually it started on Thursday evening before the Doctor John concert (two vodka shots) and a beer at the show. On Sunday I indulged with tortilla chips. Yesterday morning, I'm happy to report that I threw in the dumpster the rest of the chips and nearly a whole layer cake. Yay me. (I think) Today is another day. Bring on the water!

Oh, and I found out yesterday that I HAVE to eat breakfast. It was scary 'round dinnertime last night for I was STARVING, even after having a nice low carb lunch.

Most of that 3.5 lbs gained was probably due to the salt in the junk food. Have a good sweaty work out, drink a lot of water, and most of it will be gone the next day. I can predict when I'll be up a pound or two the day before if I eat a lot of salty foods. Don't worry too much about falling off the wagon, just get right back up.

Re: fell off the Atkins wagon

In the end its all about hunger! I no alcohol doesn't help at all but, for example when ever I'm in a situation where I know there will be carbs "around me" I always fill up my stomach as best I can. At my super bowl party I was the one who brought the wings. That way I knew for sure there would be "hot wings" for me to eat and I wouldnt' get tempted by other stuff.

The worst thing in the world is going to like mexican restaurants who put out the chips and salsa BEFORE your food comes. That sucks cuz you are hungry damn it!

Don't feel so bad. Everyone deserves a cheat day. Just make sure it is just one day.... say in a month or so. As long as you get back on then you will be just fine!!!
