    Half Ton Man

Series looking at extreme cases in human science. Patrick Deuel is one of the heaviest men ever and his heart and other organs should have collapsed long before he reached his record-breaking weight of 76 stone 8lbs. The documentary follows his struggle and that of one of his supporters, Rosalie Bradford, who was once the world's fattest woman, before losing an incredible 900lbs.
Atkins didn't say 'Calories don't count',

Me too, but it clashes with Life on Mars. Shame. The video will be in use tonight.

Thanks for the heads up Brian.

        Re: Half Ton Man

i think they showed that here in the states on the discovery channel. or at least something of the same title. in the one i saw, the man (despite his incredible food intake) was severely malnourished because of his poor diet choices. he ended up having gastric bypass surgery and lost hundreds of pounds, but it was SO discouraging to see him still reaching for the soda, chips, etc. that had helped to get him there in the first place.

It's still on, and yes it's the same one as what was on the discovery channel.

            It's really interesting!

Ya know I think I saw part of that a few weeks ago. The big thing I remember is his excuses for being fat and eating the way he does. He's like....."most people eat a lot more than me, it's just genetics" as the camera pans to the 12 pizza boxes in the trash. It really was a shame cause he's going to put the wieght back on. Very interesting however

I watched that, it really opend my eyes...wow... (I think were talkin bout the same one, if not it was a different one)
Thing that bothered me was the bag of chips still aside him...(if it is the same one) and his self denyle! It made me see why holding me accountable is so important.

                    Re: Half Ton Man

the most heartbreaking part is that he can't get out to get his snacks and sodas so his wife does it for him. every bag of chips she puts in the cart is just pushing him closer to the grave. the other thing that struck me was that he seemed like an unpleasant jerk. if i were handed my life back i would feel so blessed. i can't imagine laying around, snacking on chips, and taking myself back to square one. as for genetics, neither of his parents were HUGE (though they were considerably overweight). even if genetics are part of the problem (as i'm sure they are for many of us) it's not an excuse to give up.

                        Re: Half Ton Man

I watched this program also. There were two of them on cable tv last week. One was the half ton man and the other was the 650 pound woman. I cried as I watched both of them. It made me realize that obesity affects us all the same. Some people say they are happy and like being plus-sized, but they actually have the same internal pain and suffering that we all have.

I don't think they were jerks, I think that being overweight and feeling hopeless hardens some people. I remember having the same reactions and feelings towards people that they displayed. It a method of protecting yourself from further insults and self-hatred. His wife was ignorant for getting him all that unhealthy food. Some people are in love and want to help their spouses, even when it means doing things that are harmful to them. I am also an enabler when it comes to my daughter. She has bi-polar and many times I give-in to her instead of fighting with her even when I know I shouldn't. I can't explain it, but until it happens to you and you are in that situation...you can't understand it. It is the same as people who are married to a smoker. You beg them to quit, but if they ask you to pick up cigarettes for them at the store, you do it. It doesn't make sense.

As for losing the weight and then snacking on chips and sodas....well, we see that all the time in people who've lost weight and then return to the foods that made them fat. They haven't learned the most important part of losing weight...that it is a life-long-road a lifestyle that they need to do forever.

Richard Simmons tried to help these people too, but he can only do so much himself. Laugh at him if you will, but I have great respect for Simmons and how he's devoted his life to helping people try to shed the weight and live happier lives. We are doing the same things here in ADBB only without the world breathing all over us every step we make.

Anyways, I found these shows very eye-opening and educational. I hope both of these people find their ways to happiness and are able to someday control thier weight issues.

Unfortunately I didnt get to see it at all. I was planning on getting home in time, but didnt leave the gym until 21:45, and it was due to finish at 22:00. I saw a bit of the programme in the gym but there was no sound and the subtitles werent working.

                          Shame really.

                            this quote asbolutely bothers me..

I’ve lost 102 pounds in 70 days, eating what I wanted,” he says. “Tell me it doesn’t work. ... For me, the easiest way to stay on my diet and not go absolutely crazy to is eat (to satisfy the craving), get that out of the way and get back on the program.”

Not to mention he smokes!...he was quoted as saying, "I can’t kick two bad habits at once.
