  • Another boost to the Atkins diet

    http://www.nytimes.com/2006/02/07/he...gewanted=print

this article was interesting to me because i just had my blood work done, first time ever, so now i have a baseline to compare it to in 6 months.

My results were: total cholesterol 203
HDL 47 (the good fat) more than 50 is good
LDL 143 (the bad) under 130 is good
Triglycerides 63 less than 150 is good

Now get this, they send me a copy of a low fat diet plan. That I should cut out all red meats and, this is the part that floors me, increase my breads to 6-11 servings a day!!! Are they actually trying to kill me??
The good recommendation was increasing my excersise to 4x a week for 45 min. NO problem as soon as my ankle recovers from a weekend tubing accident...LOL.

Well if only some doctors followed their own diets.

lol, well i told the doctor i was on the atkins diet and he didn't say anything. But i suppose when my blood test results came in high they shoved the standard "helpfull" brochures in anyway.
With all the recent evidence proving that low fat does not work you'd think the health community would be right on top of this.
Hmmmmm, maybe they're just trying to stay in business....hmmmm

the more exercise will raise the good HDL which will battle the LDL and return it to the liver to be reprocessed

Bet their "diets" don't have you eating as many servings of veggies as even Atkins induction does and theUSDA serving is 1/2 cup for mst veggies so inducees eat 6 servings of veggies a day! ond OWLers well with 3 rungs of veggies plus the 3 cups from induction WOW! what a great veggie eating "diet" Atkins is.

There are foods on Atkins OWL that help lower LDL and raiseHDL like almonds, walnuts, flax seeds, soy, oats, barley, green peas.

Even if I wasn't on Atkins, I would think 6-11 servings very extreme! I would be so bloated you would have to roll me to work ; p
