  • Walden Farms Products? 2good2Btrue?

Went to health food store yesterday to restock on supplements. Last year they had an entire section devoted to low carb foods, now it is only shelf with a few Atkins canned drinks and powdered shakes and a ton of Walden Farms products. Walden Farms has everything from dressings and marinades to marshmallow dip. The weird thing is none of them have any calories, carbs, fat, etc. The nutrition panel is a lot of zeros. Is anyone familiar with these products? It just seems unrealistic that they would have no carbs when some of them have sucralose listed as an ingredient, as well as other foods like applecider vinegar, etc. I would like to find an induction-friendly barbeque sauce or flavoring, but I am really suspicious. Has anyone tried these? Anyone know if Walden Farms lies on the labels? Or if the stuff is really gross and not worth the money?
    Thanks, Liz

I tried the Walden Farms salad dressing when they first came out---it was horrible tasting. They've probably improved it since then, but I'm not in the mood to spend the money to find out.

As for the legality of it for Atkins, it really depends on the Phase of Atkins you are in and the ingredients of the product. For example, if a strawberry jam has 2 net carbs per tablespoon, it's only legal for OWL, Pre-Maintenance and Maintenance, because strawberries and other fruits aren't legal for Induction.

Megs--that's the problem. Every single product Walden Farms has has absolutely no carbs, no fiber, no calories, no fat,--nothing on the information label. I mean it has an information label--but all the values are zero; with the exception of sodium. Some of the product do have a percentage of sodium. I am in induction and would like to flavor some meat and fish before cooking. Thinking of trying it as they are all zero carbs but am afraid the labels are brazenly misleading and giving false values. Don't want to mess up my induction level of ketosis, I lose slowly enough as it is. How sure can I be of what the label says? Liz

Yep, I've tried a couple of their products way back when...can you say GAG? What a waste of good hard earned $$.

Bizbee why don't you make your own low-carb stuff? I think there are recipes using hot sauce or tomato sauce and you will know exactly what's in it. Those labels sound a bit suspicious to me and it doesn't sound like the taste will be worth it if in fact the labels are lying.

Yes, but what are the ingredients? Those must be listed somewhere on the labels. If the products have ingredients compatible with your phase of Atkins, then the product is "legal".

Also, the nutritional info is only reliable for the serving size listed on the label. If you use more than the listed serving size, the nutritional info changes. The labeling laws in the US are very lax in regards to carbs, so it's perfectly legal to label something with 0 to .499999 carbs as "0". If the serving size is 1 teaspoon and you eat 2 tablespoons, you've eaten between 0.0 to 2.9 carbs.

Probably would be a better idea, ladyinred. Anyone out there have an induction friendly barbeque tasting sauce ? (mild not very hot-family and I have gringo tongues-lol)

And there is one here from George Stella (scoll down the page) it calls for bourbon but you could leave it out, this one has a lot more ingredients though!

Here are the ingredients listed for their barbeque sauce here http://www.eatsugarfree.com/Merchant...egory_Code=CON
Ingredients: Triple filtered purifed water, tomato paste, salt, worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, food starch modified, polydextrose, natural flavors, natural spices and gerbs, soy protein, xanthan gum, citric acid, sodium benzoate, sucralose.
Although looking on the bottle of their 'original BBQ sauce' that I have here (UK) it also has garlic powder, cayenne pepper, mustard, white and cider vinegar, maltodextrin instead of polydextrose, potassium and egg yolk!

It says 'trace calories' and 210 mg sodium for a 2T serving.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

I don't like all of their products, but I do like their barbeque sauce. I ordered like 5 bottles of it straight from their web site once and it's all gone now. I haven't had any problems with the stuff.

While we were traveling a few years ago I tried their ketchup and liked it. That is the only product of theirs that I have tested at this point.
