  • Aren't you worried about your cholesterol?

Yes, I just got that question AGAIN from someone I know.

Most of the time I can take a question like that in stride and lightly touch on an explanation.

Other times I say, whether you want to adopt this WOE or not, please read the DANDR so you understand what's going on and why I'm doing what I'm doing.

But there are those times where I just go and want to body slam someone.

Just curious, do you guys handle it similarly or can you come up with another solution for the frustration/ignorance.

    Thanks!!

Re: Aren't you worried about your cholesterol?

I have read a lot about nutrition, and of course DANDR several times, so usually I feel confident when arguing with people.
But some people just talks and don't listen....that's the kind of people whom I don't even try to discuss with!

Re: Aren't you worried about your cholesterol?

Hmmpf ... the word "Atkins" seems to put so many uninformed people into a head-spinning tizzy. I used to fight back and say "read the book," but now I avoid the through, uh, dishonesty.

Example: we have a weight loss support group at work and I was uninvited (seriously!) when they found out I was doing Atkins. They're all WW folks and said my way of eating is "unhealthy." At first I got mad and asked "what's unhealthy about eating three cups of vegetables and exercising every day?" Then I told them I didn't need their support, and that instead of talking about it I'll just show 'em! But now, I just avoid the speech altogether by saying "I'm not eating sugar or white flour" -- not "I'm doing Atikins." If someone presses, I say I'm doing South Beach (even read the book so I can play along).

Funny thing is, three years ago I told my dad I was worried about his health when he did Atkins. My, how I've changed!

Re: Aren't you worried about your cholesterol?

I read one of the best responsed EVER to the cholesterol question. I saved it in my quotes file.

2 years ago when I first did Atkins my doctor said to stop because my cholesterol was going to go up. I asked why?? He said that there is a lot of Chol. in the Red meat I eat. I said, so, if I eat high carbohydrates my cholesterol will go down? He said YES!!! So, I said, if cows eat grass all day, why is their so much Cholesterol in red meat???
        His answer???..... SILENCE

Re: Aren't you worried about your cholesterol?

I'm the first to sing from the highest tower that I'm an Atkins girl from head to toe- from the weight I've removed to the improvements in my lipid profile to the vast improvements in my physical/cardiovascular abilities. I'm of the belief that if I don't tell the truth and do my part to get it out there that I'm just as guilty as the uneducated folks at perpetuating the myths that abound about my chosen WOE.

If you're going to argue the merits/drawbacks of my WOE with me, you'd better be more well versed than I am on it or it's going to be a ride for ya

Go ahead. Ask me about my cholesterol. $5 says mine is better than the person asking me LOL

Re: Aren't you worried about your cholesterol?

Ask them when the last time they had fast food was, and if they knew how BAD that was for them? Ask them how much water they have drank or fresh veggies they have eaten in the last week?? This usually shuts them up. Most people eat a LOT of fast food, and NO veggies. I never ate veggies and lived on take out before this WOL. They will gripe at you about Atkins, then head to Pizza Hut on their way home from work, too funny!!!

First, somebody needs to persuade me that cholesterol has ANY effect on longevity.

Personally, I think its another way for the drug companies to keep making billions.

Lol I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE THAT DOES THAT!

Alot of the countering I get are from overweight people. That have to make excuses not to lose weight and eat the cake. One being, so and so diet is unhealthy. When you prove them wrong, they don't want to hear it because it reflects back on them and they have no excuse.
