    Re: Calling international rescue

I kinda know how you feel as I am living in Secret at the moment- trying to hide my Atkins from my boyfriend. He doesnt approve of the diet and hates it when im on it. To be fair he thinks he is looking after me and protecting me from FATTY foods, but i know he just doesnt get it because he has given to the BAD hype.

So basically i am cooking carb full meals for him- pasta- tea and cakes-potatoes with gravy etc etc and trying a. not to let him know about the Atkins or b. givein to the carbs that are tempting me continuosly!

When he has his pudding and tea at night though i survive by leaving him in the telly and taking my coffee and cream to the computer where i log onto this site. It really does help.

    Good luck

      THUNDERBIRDS ARE GO!!!

I have another take on the subject. Look at it from your wife's point of view. If you see your wife engaging in an activity which you sincerely believe will negatively impact their health, what would you do? Would you stand by and do nothing?

You wife and her mother represent two generations of Weight Watchers. It's been drummed into their minds that fat is bad. The fact that your wie is trying to feed you WW food means she's trying to save you, though the intent is misplaced.

Giving her a copy of DANDR to read won't work. That would be like trying to convert a Muslim by making him read the Bible.

What you are dealing with here is low-fat dogma. Yes, DOGMA. If you do enough reading you'll know that the low-fat diet is based more on faith than science. In other words, you are dealing with a religion and your wife is trying to convert you... you heathen.

As you are very well aware, tose with dogmatic beliefs cannot easily by swayed by the weight of evidence. What you need to do is to take a page from early Christian missionaries. You need to supplant existing dogma with your own.

      How?

Ask her what WW's stance is on refined sugar, then tell her that you don't think WW will consider it a sin if you take out refined sugar out of your diet. Ask her to explain to you how the glycemic index works, then tell her how the rungs of OWL follow the glycemic index. Ask her what WW's stance is on veggies, then tell her how someone properly folowing Atkins actually eats more veggies than the average American.

So your wife tells you that carbs are important in your health. Don't argue. Agree with her. Tell her that fiber are carbohydrates and don't count against your carb limit. Ask her which WW considers to be more important, the amount of carbs or the type of carbs? She'd probably be surprised how much WW and Atkins is in agreement on this.

Once she sees that Atkins isn't entirely heretical, then you can slowly turn her to your viewpoint. Hopefully she'll stop sabotaging your efforts by then.

Your point of view is interesting where my wife is concerned...

but my mother in law once "accidently" put bleach into my coffee when we announced our engagement many years ago....you dont forget that kind of thing in a hurry....

anyhow my mother in law is going back home after the weekend so I'll get my wife back and try to slip her an atkins book when she isnt looking...

Like mother, like daughter from the sound of it. I feel for you, John. Al you can do is be strong and set a good example. You'll be thin, healthy and happy and they will still be fat, sick and unhappy. You can only chip away by degrees. Perhaps when you find articles in the papaer suchas the recent one about low fat does NOT work you could read them out and get her into a discussion? I know though, that with some people reson simply does not work.

Good luck with your WOE, and I hope the home front improves soon for you.
