  • Fat but fit

A very interesting article in the Sydney Morning Herald's Health Section yesterday. Talks about metabolically healthy but obese (MHO) individuals.

Lean doesn't always mean healthy and fat doesn't necessarily mean unfit, writes Thea O'Connor.

I absolutely agree! At 190 pounds I'm fairly heavy, but I'm jogging and feeling stronger than I ever did at lower weights.

A higher number of lbs (than the posted charts) does not equate to fat because we all know that muscle weighs more than fat.

Ah Ha! See! It really bugs my doctor that I am overweight but in such good shape! I say it's because I have been exercising since I first became overweight when I had my 2nd child 23 years ago, I have been trying to lose this "baby-fat" ever since. I may try different diets, and sometimes I eat very poorly, but I walk 2-3 miles a day, 6 days a week no matter what, and I always have. Can you imagine how fat I would be if I hadn't?

            Re: Fat but fit

I think for losers like us, "fitness" has to be judged relative to what we were at the start of our weight loss journey.

I'm still losing, I'm still fat, but I'm "fitter" than I was when I began-----I mean it's kind of sad for skinnier folks when I can walk up the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, faster than they can and get to the top without needing to catch my breath!
