  • Fat Fast?

In the induction forum, some one posted about the Fat Fast and now I am curious.

Who has attempted the Fat Fast? What were your results and why did you do it?

I know several people here who 'attempted' the Fat Fast. I hope they answer your question. You'd be surprised at their results.

Dr. Atkins explains it in the Metabolic Resistance chapter. What you are doing is correct---exercise and following the diet. Slow loser does not mean "no" loser. Fat Fast is for the people who have a high metabolic resistance to weight loss without any of the "correctable" factors for that metabolic resistance.

Some people who are impatient with their results try it and find they lose weight---water weight, which they regain once they resume their 'regular' Atkins.

                  Re: Fat Fast?

I couldn't find Joan's thread (probably lost during the board migration) But this is from a hardcopy I saved.

I posted this back in June, 2004 and will cut and paste it here for you. This is my (experienced) opinion on the Fat Fast:
I've lost 61 lbs but want to lose another 25 by October when I go home to visit old friends who don't know I've lost the weight. A week ago I started to panic -- got out the Atkins book and read about the Fat Fast. Completely ignored the sentence that says it should be done ONLY by metabolicly resistent people and it could otherwise be dangerous. Pft. Not me.

I started Saturday morning. I ate only the stuff on the Fat Fast list. I felt just fine all day Saturday. DH and I worked outside for 6 or 8 hours, which is pretty standard for us on the weekend these days.

Sunday morning I could barely get up. I just wanted to sleep. This from a person who JUMPS out of bed every morning between 5-6am after only 5-6 hours of sleep. I am a HIGH ENERGY person - until this fat fast.

I had horrible muscle weakness throughout my body and a nasty nasty headache. I ignored it and decided to keep going and ate only from the fat fast on Sunday as well.

By Sunday afternoon I suffered incredible exhaustion, but EVEN WORSE, I suffered true emotional depression and the most god-awful carb cravings I've ever experienced. I have not experienced ANY cravings since the first two weeks of starting this WOE 7 months ago, but because of the fat fast my body was SCREAMING for carbs.

By Monday morning I couldn't take it anymore and started eating my normal Atkins foods. At work, I almost screamed at a co-worker over something that normally wouldn't have phased me at all. I was edgy, depressed, out-of-sorts and feeling physically worn out and just plain terrible.

It took me a good 3 days to get back to being my high energy pleasant self again.

I didn't lose any weight, I gained almost uncontrollable cravings for carbs (if I'd had any carb food in the house I don't think I would have made it through without binging), emotional depression, physical lethargy, muscle weakness, mental weakness (fuzzy headed feeling) and probably risked losing my job if I'd continued on the fat fast.

I learned a HUGE lesson. I would not wish that fat fast on my worst enemy. There are altneratives that are SMART and HEALTHY and those are what I'm doing now -- up'd my water intake, increased my exercise from 3 to 6 days a week, monitor my carb intake much more closely AND gave up artificial sweeteners. I've done that in the last 5 days - and lost 3 lbs.

Dr. Atkins knew what he was talking about -- that fat fast is ONLY for a small percentage of metabolically-resistant people and should not be played around with just because you've lost patience with the rate you're losing. There are healthy "drastic" measures you can take -- more exercise; more water; post your menu for review; cut back on cheese, sodium-laden meats, caffeine, artificial sweeteners; use fitday religiously to watch for carb-creep.

I can't tell you how strongly I feel about this. THE FAT FAST IS DANGEROUS to both your mental and physical health.

And by the way - I actually met my weight loss goal last October simply by sticking to the plan TO THE LETTER, taking my vitamins/supplements, drinking water and exercising. No cheats, no "just one bite's", no excuses.

                  Joan J

                      Re: Fat Fast?

I tried the fat fast once. I hit quite a stall at 160 and decided to try it. I too felt week, nausous.....just a general run down feeling. I find that I lose faster when I add loads of veggies and 3-4 fruits to my daily intake. That coupled with water and exercise......well I just whooshed! For you Matt?? Lifting! Are you doing any weight lifiting? And if you are, you need those good carbs. Have you stalled?

                        Re: Fat Fast?

I do cardio 5 times a week. It includes running for at least 2 miles, 100 sit ups, 100 push ups and various other exercises.

Just out of curiosity, did you have the induction flu when you started atkins? I have gone an entire day eating very little and I notice that it does affect my ability to concentrate. With 1200 calories with the modified fat fast might be a decent way to break a stall. I know Dr. Atkins says it is risky but listen, I know people on here have done it and I just want to know their results.

I would like to weigh 175 pounds. So I should eat around 1750 calories a day. I can eat more if I exercise. I am just using these numbers to make a point. Probably a bad one but if I cut 550 calories from this, I would be eating at fat fast levels. Now this would only be from 4 to 5 days.

Is this a bad way to break a stall? Yes. Would it be interesting to know the results of others that have tried this for the full length of time? Certainly! I am currently not in a stall. I went almost 3 weeks without any scale movement but I beat it by cutting down my portions for a couple of days and whooshed out 3 pounds.

Yeah I lost weight, but I felt like smelly excrement. Finally it got on my nerves enough that I went on a binge. So yeah you may be tempted, but really, in the long run you get a lot better results following the book and staying away from the fat fast.

I saw that and I found it to be a bit vague, did you stick to the 1000 calorie regimend for 2 weeks? Did you go to the modified fat fast after one week?

It still sounds to me like a good way to prime your body for induction even if you do it for only 4 days. I feel that you did it longer that what should have been attempted but I have no idea, thats why im asking.
