  • Cholesterol Testing Question

I will be having a follow-up test in about a month so that I can compare my new levels to my previous ones. It seems like I have read different things about how to make the most of this test. Any experts want to shed light on how I can ensure the most accurate results (i.e. how many fasting hours before the blood draw, eating patterns in the days before)?

I just want to know the REAL deal so I can get a fair comparison. I am actually looking forward to it b/c my pre-Atkins results were:

    Total cholesterol - 268
    Triglycerides - 249
    HDL - 46
    VLDL - 50
    LDL - 172

    Any help is appreciated!

The usual requirement is a 12 hour fast. Dr. Atkins mentions a 14 hour fast in DANDR.

Stay on plan, EXERCISE, and yes, a 12-14 hour fast before the test should give you the most accurate results!

yep and eat what for you uis a normal meal plan the day before because dietary cholesterol will stillbe in your system andif you had a very higher then normal cholesterol meal for dinner it could mess up your results.

Well it seems like a normal meal for me would be higher in chol. Like a steak or deviled eggs or something of that nature. Should I steer toward a leaner dinner the night before or just forget about it and eat like I am not testing? I don't want to skew the results but I don't want any unnecessary high numbers either. The Dr wanted to put me on meds before and I am SO not wanting to hear that again!

If you are really worried about it just have chicken and fish and your veges the day before. Avoid eggs for that day, but the evidence convicting them of raising cholesteraol is now very challenged. Just enjoy your food, I'm sure your results will be an improvement over pre-Atkins.
