  • why to people say that?!?!

    ok
i am sick and tired of people commenting on aktins and "dieting" all together!!!

so i live with two other people who are awesome! they have been great about my diet...that is they don't really comment one way or another...which is awesome...occasionally my roomate will be eating chips or having a beer and he'll offer me some but when i decline there is no fuss.

the problem is with some of my friends. Like my good freind who dieted with me last year and then gained all the weigh back and a LOT MORE and i were having dinner and he looked at what i was ordering and siad...oh god you're not doing atkins agian...just give up, we are always goinng to be fat. (lets leave aside the fact that he called me fat for a second )

then the other day i was eating dinner with my roomate and our mutual friend and i was having a hamburger with out a bun and my roomate offered me bread (he thought i didn't know we had buns) and i said no and when they looked at me strange i said "oh i don't eat bread" to aviod the atkins bashing session.....but that didn't work our friend (who is 5'10 and maybe 110lbs) starts in on how that is soooo stupid and how olympic athletes eat carbs and don't really diet and look at them

well if i looked like an olympic athlete i wouldn't have to lose weight!!!!!!!!!

if i was an alcoholic and turned down a glass of red wine would you tell me... you know wine is supposed to be really good for you?!?!?!?!?!!?!?

sorry i am just really mad about that

everytime u try and diet there are always people who try and cut u down...why do they do that

of course there are also people who are great motivators and give u tons of support and love...and those people are the best

Yeah some people dont understand, they dont want you to lose the weight cause then they will be fat and you...well you wont be.. I got 99% skinny friends, they are growing more supportive when they seen the results. Give it time eventually they will either be happy for you, or well there not true friends. I rather lose it all gain it back and repeat rathen then sit where I was a month ago *hugz*
I began saying to people...It's just food, there IS more to life then the type of food we eat.

yep there are folk out there like that. You can educate them withthe DR PHIL stuyff (like that fellow who tolkd you to give it up)when you say that it makes me feel that you think I'm a failure and powerless over my medical condition. I need for you as my friend to assist me and help me be strong as I struggle to gain control of my eating" now he can either be your friend and now become a meember of your support network ( see Dr Atkins knew folk would do stuff like that when he told us to recruit friends family and coworkers tobe part of our support network) or let you know he really isn't your friemd and say no I will not help you.

arg- I totally agree, however, most of the people in my life are not telling me that it is bad or even a "diet"... and if someone does say something... they haven't known me for long and don't know how far I have come with atkins and how much better I am now. The close people in my life may have been skeptical at first, however, they see me now and knew me before and realize I made a decision in my life for the better that is going to be here forever....

You have a great attitude. You just hug those motivators and the rest.. well you do with their opinions what you do with trash any other day, you discard it where it belongs, the garbage can that contains all the weight you've already dropped!

Re: why to people say that?!?!

Ciaobella, last year for Mother's Day, my sisters, cousins and I combined our forces and held a Mother's Day lunch for our moms. One of my sisters is on Atkins too. So we brought food that we could eat and others could eat, namely vegetables and fruit.

During the lunch, the subject came to that 'awful diet', Beth and I are on. So, here are my cousins and aunts, most of whom are overweight or obese, snarfing down cake and pie, scooping buckets of sugar into their tea and coffee, eating mountains of bread and pasta----all the while telling us how unhealthy our Atkins diet is and how we should eat "healthier". Meanwhile, Beth and I ate salad, sauteed green beans, grilled chicken, baked salmon and had sliced strawberries with heavy cream for dessert. Yet, we were "unhealthy".

Re: why to people say that?!?!

I feel your frustration! My mother (who has Type II Diabetes) is a sugar freak. Everytime she eats a danish or piece of cake she always asks me if I want one. Or even fruit - an orange or banana- she's like can you have that? NO! Then she complains how she just can't understand "diets" like this. Uh, maybe if you did you wouldn't be diabetic and overweight. I keep telling her over and over, but something tells me she doesn't want to see me suceed because she is seeming to fail.
Soooo, I feel the pain. Hang in there!! I finally got to the point I just laugh and everytime I do she gets so confused what I'm laughing at she forgets what she is saying! HAHA

Re: why to people say that?!?!

Its hard to be heavy, and see people around you losing weight. It makes them jealous, and reminds them that they need to lose weight, too. Just try to remember that your friend is only being mean to you, because he is unhappy with his own life. Its kind of sad, but maybe as he sees you improve your life he will be motivated too!

Oh, and people who have never struggled with their weight will never understand!!! My DH and I got into a carb disagreement last night, he said you need carbs for fuel. I said, no you don't!!! You just need a few from the right food choices. He then brought up marathon runners as an example of why he needs carbs. I laughed, the closet thing that man ever came to running a marathon is crossing the road to get the mail!!! I asked him if he was entering a marathon, he said NO, so I told him he didn't need all those carbs!!! He let the subject drop after that.

Just keep the faith, do what you know is right and you will reap the rewards!!!

Sometimes I think that the skinnier people wouldnt be as happy if they didnt have overweight poeple to pick on about their diet all the time....

Perhaps thats the real reason why so many of these awful anti Atkins web sites seem to be all over the place!

Well tough luck! I'm not going to suffer an awful deabilitating diet just to make a few idiots happy.

its Atkins for me and I suggest you ignore those who try to disrupt your diet by offering bread, cakes etc.

                          why do people say that?!?!
Because they're idiotic and uninformed... and dumb enough they don't care they're uninformed.

and how olympic athletes eat carbs and don't really diet and look at them
HA! Back to my previous viewpoint of some people being idiotic. How do they think olympics athletes get to that point? My nephew was in the Torino Olympics and came in 4th in the Nordic Combined Sprint. His coaches don't prescribe his diet, but he understandably eats very well. Good fresh foods high in nutrients. Junk food doesn't fuel him with where he wants to go.

To make you feel better, I can definitely picture your friends putting down my nephew for staying on his training regime. Some people don't understand goals and that it takes dedication to make them, no matter what the level. Kudos for staying with your program. You know what works for you!!

Isn't that the truth!!!! I get crap all the time from my relatives who think how I eat and how I run are STUPID! Meanwhile, they are overweight, tired, and total couch potatoes. I ask you, who is the stupid one?

As for the Olympic athletes, considering they do up to 6-8 hours trining per DAY, of course they can eat more. And look how many of them run to fat when they stop training and keep comsuming a training level diet.
