i have a killer today. Between the movers and it being day 3, I'm sweating and shivering and my eyeballs are exploding. I take Midrin for migraines, and I'm trying not to take any, but I think it's time. It doesn't have much fillers, so I can't think why I shouldn't.

PRESCRIPTION: Each red capsule with pink band contains Isometheptene Mucate USP, 65 mg.; Dichioraiphenazone USP, 100 mg.; and Acetaminophen USP, 325 mg.

Isometheptene Mucate is a white crystalline powder having a characteristic aromatic odor and bitter taste. It is an unsaturated aliphatic amine with sympathomimetic properties.

Dichioraiphenazone is a white, microcrystalline powder, with slight odor and tastes saline at first, becoming acrid. It is a mild sedative.

Acetaminophen, a non-salicylate, occurs as a white, odorless, crystalline powder, possessing a slightly bitter taste.

Midrin capsules contain FD&C Yellow No.6 as a color additive.

ACTIONS: Isometheptene Mucate, a sympathomimetic amine, acts by constricting dilated cranial and cerebral arterioles, thus reducing the stimuli that lead to vascular headaches. Dichloraiphenazone, a mild sedative, reduces the patient's emotional reaction to the pain of both vascular and tension headaches. Acetaminophen raises the threshold to painful stimuli, thus exerting an analgesic effect against all types of headaches.
INDICATIONS: For relief of tension and vascular headaches.*
    * Based on a review of this drug (Isometheptene mucate) by the National Academy of Sciences - National Research Council and/or other information, FDA has classified the other indication as "possibly" effective in the treatment of migraine headache. Final classification of the less-than-effective indication requires further investigation.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Midrin-" is contraindicated in glaucoma and/or severe cases of renal disease, hypertension, organic heart disease, hepatic disease and in those patients who are on monoamine-oxidase (MAO) inhibitor therapy.

PRECAUTIONS: Caution should be observed in hypertension, peripheral vascular disease and after recent cardiovascular attacks.

ADVERSE REACTIONS: Transient dizziness and skin rash may appear in hypersensitive patients. This can usually be eliminated by reducing the dose.

    DOSAGE and ADMINISTRATION:

FOR RELIEF OF MIGRAINE HEADACHE: The usual adult dosage is two capsules at once. followed by one capsule every hour until relieved, up to 5 capsules within a twelve hour period.

FOR RELIEF OF TENSION HEADACHE: The usual adult dosage is one or two capsules every four hours up to 8 capsules a day.

    Re: migraine

It will go soon. I had a 3 day screamer when I started INduction, I think it was mainly caffeine withdrawal and my body protesting the big change. Hang in there. Take your meds if you must.

      Re: migraine

I also take Midrin, but my understanding of how the drug works is that you must take it at onset of the migraine for it to be effective. If you wait until you have the full headache, it doesn't do much good for a migraine. I have taken it for about 10 years now.

I have classic migraines and get an aura, so it's easy for me to know when to take it -- the instant I see the aura. Also -- while not quite kosher for Atkins die hards, I have found that a big dose of caffeine taken with the Midrin increases its effectiveness immensely. I drink a couple of cups of coffee or a diet Mountain Dew with the initial dose of Midrin. However, this make such a huge difference in the effectiveness of the Midrin, that's it's worth it for me.

You might want to talk to your doctor about other migraine drugs and double check when to take the Midrin, especially if you don't get auras. There are a lot of other migraine drugs out there now that battle the pain regardless of when they taken.

      Good luck!

        Re: migraine

Well I do feel better, not great, but improved. I get the auras too, but i also get bad tension headaches. They come around TOM, which is also now. i took two right after i posted. I would normally take another to really get at it, but i don't want to go to bed, I have lots of things to do round the empty apartment. I dampened the ache just enough to keep moving. I always disliked the way I feel when I take the right dose, so I take a little less. I get real fuzzy and I end up in a halkf stupor/sleep all night. Last migraine I ended up sweating all the way through to the mattress. No appetite either. i do feel more functional now. I'm really hoping a healthier WOL will lessen them. Thanks guys

          ((((hugs))))

It's good to hear you're starting to feel better already. Check this thread too, in case it might be of any help in the future.
