  • Sugar Question

So much info here, I wasn't sure where to ask this, so here goes. I'm not sure if sugar is supposed to be counting for anything when we start expanding our foods. I'm in OWL but this is a general question.

I have 1/2 cup of carrots with my dinner, as an example. (Insert anything you eat that has a sugar count, no matter what phase you are in)

    It has:
    6 carbs
    2 fiber
    4 sugar

Do we do anything with the sugar grams, other than just pay attention and try to eat things that are low in sugar? Lots of things we eat at each stage of the diet have (even fresh stuff) sugar, naturally.

I'm wanting to check on this, it's part I've just never really "gotten". These are different from sugar alcohols, right?

      Re: Sugar Question

As you suggested Jasmain the 'sugar' grams in fruits and veggies and other foods that are natural and not from added sugar are just taken into account in the carbs we count towards our daily 'allowance of carbs'
In the instance you gave, you subtract the fibre as usual, leaving a net carb count of 4.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

I agree, you just subtract the fibre. There are naturally occuring sugars in almost all the vegetables, fruits, dairy etc. that we eat. The OWL ladder is set up such that the lower glycemic foods (less naturally occuring sugars) are introduced first. This way we can determine how our bodies handle each food group. Carrots would be way up there!

          Re: Sugar Question

yep what they said the sugar we avoid is the ones listes in the ingredients lists. that which you see in the nutritonal label is simple the noncomplex carbohydrates in the food but they natural sugars or added sugars.

But for you JAS step away from the carrots they are on the starch veggies rung and you are not there yet.

            Re: Sugar Question

I think the posters answered the sugar part well. Just look towards net carbs.

However, to sucessfully utilize the glycemic index....Compare the things that you are allowed to eat at your rung. If you choose lower on the index, the less impact they should have on blood sugar, cravings, etc. Higher choices would have greater impact. If you choose higher on the index (still based on your rung's choices), you may find that adding a little extra fat to that particular meal may help you avoid some of the side effects - if you notice any!

Correct me if I am wrong anyone! I definitely would not want to lead her astray!
