  • Question me & my mom have been aruging about.

Why is my mom losing weight faster than I am?
    1. She eats more carbs and calories than me.
    2. She's 48 (thank god she doesnt know im posting that)
    3. She's only been dieting about a month and dropped 10.
    4. She even buys snacks like sunchips and chex mix and eats it.
    5. She drinks alot of tea/caffeine not really much water.

I'm 16, I weigh 17lbs less than her (it was 27 but she lost weight)
I eat on average 650 calories - 850 calories and around 24gms of carbs.
I dont want to eat so little calories because I am always so tired and I am always starving I have to drink 100oz a day just to keep my tummy from getting hunger pangs. I eat my veggies, I love salad, broccoli and cauliflower. I am getting my mom to get celery and cream cheese today for a snack for me before bed because I have a terrible time falling asleep hungry. I lift weights, do situps, leg lifts and lifting crunches.

    Whats the deal?

Different people have different metabolisms. Hence, some people lose faster than others.

And everyone has their own Critical Carbohydrate Losing Level. Mine is 40, but we have some members with CCLLs above 100.

What concerns me is your statement that you are always "tired" and "starving" and need to drink alot of water to keep your stomach from growling. Ketosis helps to stave off any hunger pangs. But if your body is "starving" for food/energy, you'll feel hunger: ketosis or not. So you might want to eat to satisfy your hunger, rather than eating to satisfy a daily calorie goal.

yep what Megs said. remember too if you are correctly eating and doing your Atkins you are adding lean body tissues.

Since you are tired all the time you could be slowing down your metabolism with your restricted cals. eat your Atkins and satisfy your hunger. eating increases metabolism as the body revs up to burn those fuels you are in the process of eating..

I say you may want to take in more calories. Especially if you are exercising that much you could use the caloric intake to fuel your workouts.

Re: Question me & my mom have been aruging about.

I try to take in more calories but 4+ days a week my mom orders pizza, gets chinese food or goes to some italian place. Last night she went to wendys luckily this wendys had chicken and I got a chicken breast and just picked the skin off & gave it to my dog. Tonight she has no clue what we're getting but again I had to literally beg her not to get pizza and give her a sob story about how i'll have to wear long sleeved shirts all summer because i'm so fat and i'll never go out.

We have this low carb peter pan peanut butter, its 4gms of net carbs per 2tbls and 200 calories. I know its not allowed on induction thats why i've been avoiding it but I could get an extra couple hundred calories if I ate it on celery.

I don't eat red meat (i have this really weird love for cows they are my favorite farm animal i've always wanted a calf) or any pork unless its like a really good porkroast my mom made or pork stiry fry (no rice of course) and bacon. I dont even like to eat bacon sometimes because of the high fat content but I know I need to eat it for the calories and it keeps me full for a few hours.

RAWR I will figure this out. I CANNOT have a slower metabolism than my 48 year old mom!! I'm so competitive everyone in my family is on a diet my aunt lost 26lbs, my uncle lost 16, my mom lost 10, my other aunt lost 9 and i've lost around a pathetic 3 and I bet it was water weight. Its killing me, i'm the active 16 yr old I should be losing weight the fastest. Maybe its because I weigh less than them? I'm just trying to find any reason.

All I can suggest is follow the Atkins rules. Cheese is calorically dense. Eat up to your limit if you can. Exercise, drink your water and take your supplements. Sounds like you have some challenges based on the foods your mom buys. Can you shop on your own?

Re: Question me & my mom have been aruging about.

Yes, you will loose weight slower if you don't have as much to loose than
them. Are you drinking any diet sodas? Those can/will slow down the loss.

If Mom gets pizza just eat the topping...be careful though as to not eat over your limit in cheese. Don't get carried away...also eat your salad greens with a high fat dressing, this will keep you satisfied longer.

              I hope I helped some.

Re: Question me & my mom have been aruging about.

as a 16 yr old you need to be eating more and talking with your doc because you have not finished developing into an adult body.

Do not fear the fats if you are doing atkins.

here is a little math chem and bio lesson for you
it takes very little energy 4% to convert carbohydrates to energy units in the human body. it takes 11% to convert fats to energy units so for the same amount of fats and carbs eatten you will lose more weight eating the fat! Atkins is a ketogenic plan because :
                1) we burn more energy just proccessing the food
                2) we get appetite suppression
                3) it tastes better
4? lots of health benefits too like lower blood pressure better blood sugar control and lowering of triglycerides too.

so if you are going to do Atkins then you need to eat the fats almost 65% of your toal caloric intake for the day should be from fats 30% from protein and keep your carbs under 20 net grams. Just as a high performance car will not run when the tank is enpty or the wrong fuel in there so to will your Atkins not work if you don't eat it correctly.

                Happy low carbing.

                  Hi lollipop
How tall are you, what was your starting weight, what is your current weight and your goal weight?
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Re: Question me & my mom have been aruging about.

Oh - and have you read the Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution book yet?

I was wondering because I wondered why you are restricting your calories?
On induction we are supposed to count net carbs (total less fibre) and not worry about calories.

As not2late said, we are supposed to eat induction-legal foods if we are hungry, not stop because we have eaten a certain number of calories.

Re: Question me & my mom have been aruging about.

Okay -- I'm sorry if I gave the impression that I am restricting my calories! I am not I would go up to 1600 if I could find enough food to eat. I just COUNT my calories because its a habbit. I've been doing it for two years this october. I started atkins when I was 15 & 220lbs, I lost 62lbs in 5 months maintained for 3-4 months & then went off the diet for almost 9 months and managed to put 10lbs back on (by eating LOTS of fast food when I took a vaca at my aunts), I just started atkins back up yesterday & lost 3lbs of which were water weight probably so now im only up 7 of those pounds. I was 166.6 this morning i'm 5'2 and my ultimate goal weight is 117ish. I am a size 9-13 depending on the brand and a shirt small-large depending on the brand. I'll put my stats & stuff up in a signature. I think I did alot better with calories today because I feel ALOT more energized and less hungry!

Oh & I had planned to go grocery shopping today but my mom ended up stopping at the store on her way home from the doctors and I didn't get to go, she did get me some chicken breast, low carb veggie dip, cream cheese, celery and low carb wheat bread. I wont eat the wheat bread.

Re: Question me & my mom have been aruging about.

It sounds like you and your mom need to sit down and do some serious grocery shopping planning.

As 2Big said, you are still a teen and you have greater nutritional needs and requirements than us, oldies. We go through 2 rapid growth spurts in our lives: from infancy to about age 8 and from the start of puberty to our young adult years (which is defined as late teens-early twenties). During these periods, the nutritional needs are great.

Yeah, I know, you look like an adult. And you probably have stopped growing taller, but you don't stop developing and maturing until you reach your early 20s. So, while your bones aren't growing longer, they are still growing thicker and they need the proper nutrients to do that. While you've past puberty, your body is still working overtime to make hormones and other important compounds that your adult body needs. So things are still in the process during your teen years.

Again, you really need to sit down with your mom about the grocery list, so you will have enough food (nutrients) available for you.
